I have my setting for downloads on ask before downloading; however, MOzilla thinks they're so awesome that I need Firefox 23. the problem is that it interferes

I have set my download on ask before downloading; however, I guess the program gets a little put off because it keeps asking and I keep saying "NO". Unfortunately, it takes it upon itself to download anyway. I love Firefox; however, I have been informed by my school where I teach online courses, that there are problems with Firefox 23 and our LMS. I DO NOT want to have to keep installing Firefox 22 throughout the semester. How can I get the damn browser to quit doing what it wants and pay attention to my settings? Thank you

When you want to update Firefox, you may need to change the app.update.channel value to release.

Try to following in Firefox:

  1. Go to about:config
  2. Find the app.update.auto string
  3. Change the value to false

Please report back soon.

I had already made that change. I really don't want to have to use Internet Explorer or have to continuously install Firefox 22. Maybe this needs to be reported to Mozilla to let them know that they are overriding settings and forcing the installation of updates.

That is weird? If you followed the steps above, the details should report just fine.

All I need is a list of all installed extensions, and modified preferences.

Everything you posted above looks fine.

Some anti-virus programs will update programs automatically. Do you have a setting like that on your current anti-virus program?

more options

I use AVG 2013 and I don't believe there is that option. At least, I'm not seeing it. It kind of sounds like you're stumped as well.

more options

I actually am stumped, but I think that I can figure it out.

I remember someone else on the forum had an identical issue.
I will try to find the page.

Take your time. I'm hitting the shower for bed. I'll check back in tomorrow morning. Thanks for all your help.

Try the following:

  1. Go to about:config
  2. Find the string app.update.channel
  3. Change the value to 0
  4. Find the string app.update.enabled
  5. Change the value to false

If this doesn't work, change the app.update.channel value back to release and the app.update.enabled value back to true.

What's in that user.js file?

app.update.auto doesn't appear in your list of important modified preferences, not sure if that isn't considered "important" or not.

IMO, app.update.enabled needs to be set to false to turn off Firefox program updates. The other app.update. ... should be left at their default value - they don't have a direct effect on turning off Firefox program updates.

It worked. No more Firefox 23 until I say so. Thank you for all the time and energy you expended on this issue. Computer Whiz, you're a charm!

the-edmeister, Computer Whiz had already solved the problem. I didn't need to work with yours. Sorry.

Most likely your LMS trips the mixed active content blocker in Firefox 23, suppressing insecure content in secure pages and displaying a shield icon in the address bar to the left of the URL. This article describes that feature in more detail: Mixed content blocking in Firefox

You can disable that feature until the school gets its security act together. Well, actually, you'll have to disable it after the upgrade, since it wasn't turned on in Firefox 22.

This is not a site-specific setting, it's global. Hopefully in the future there will be a way to only disable it for particular sites.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste mixed and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the security.mixed_content.block_active_content to toggle its value from true (default value) to false.

You probably need to reload any already loaded page to get the missing content.

Assuming that works, please pass it on to your school so they can get the word out. If there is some other problem, it would be helpful to know what it is.
