I just got a new PC laptop - Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 with Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core i5. I removed the Symantec antivirus demo (that I had never started) and installed the free version of AVG, and installed Firefox. (I also have Chrome installed.) Instead of syncing Firefox I just replaced some of the new Profile files with files from my previous computer's Firefox Profile (history, bookmarks, auto-complete etc) as prescribed in a support file here. I've added the following extensions/add-ons: Adblock Plus, Vertical Tabs, Cool previews, Download Status Bar. I also have the Adobe Flash Player 11 plug-in.

Everything works fine *until* I shut down and restart the computer. Then, when trying to open my Firefox window, there's a long delay (5+ minutes) before the window finally opens with that "(Not responding)" indicator in the window title. After a while it looks like I can use the window... but it constantly freezes and shows the "(Not responding)" indicator. Then I get a "Warning: Unresponsive script" window (Script: chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:2170 that won't go away.

Trying to close the window pops up the "Not responding" box, with the detailed information copied below.

I'm writing this from the Chrome browser - which I'm seriously considering moving to after using only Firefox for years. I've never had a problem like this. Any help would be appreciated!

What is the exact chrome:// address of that error message?

No, Firefox uses the "chrome://" protocol to access its own internal files and also access files from extensions, so that has nothing to do with Google Chrome.

The name of the file in the chrome protocol link is usually an indication of the cause of the hang.
If it start with the name of an extension then this extension is likely causing it.

I've done a clean uninstall, then a new install of the latest Firefox edition without doing any changes or web surfing. Then I shut down the computer. Then I started up the computer again, and the new Firefox hangs.

I know you have read the article and said you had tried most of it but have you tried deleting duplicated sessionstore files.

Ordinarily the system does not duplicate these files if it is doing so something is going wrong and the duplicated files may be one of the reasons for the hangs. Do you have duplicated sessionstore files ?

I do not think you said what the actual error message is.

  • Is it the same each time? and what is it?
  • use the error console to check Shift + Ctrl + J

There is one sessionstore.js file (which I deleted) and then sessionstore.bak (which I didn't delete). Firefox is still hanging on startup.

The unresponsive script is always: chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:2170

...and the error details when I try to force-close the window is always the "AppHangB1" listed in my initial post.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

.I did notice a thread mentioning a similar error and AVG.

It would not harm to try Firefox with AVG disabled. You can always test this whilst offline so as not to take unnecessary risks.

I do not have any other ideas and so will leave it to others if that does not help.

Hi cor-el. I tried starting in Windows Safe mode with networking support. The Firefox window would take a few minutes to first open up. After that It would finally load links (I had just one tab open) and actually played a youtube video (without sound)... but only after freezing for 90+ seconds at each click. The task manager said it was not responding.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

I have done many clean uninstalls as you have suggested (again) cor-el so that is not a solution. I don't care about saving user settings at this point. I have a few files from my old profile (history and bookmarks) that I'll try to use if I can get Firefox to work.

Is there any settings in Windows that I should be sure are enabled/disabled? Firefox *is* allowed through the Firewall. Remember, Google Chrome is working perfectly fine.

I've completely uninstalled AVG and I'm now using Microsoft Security Essentials.

One other suggestion it is only a workaround and not a solution.but may help.Try Firefox Portable as an additional browser. If it works you will be able to import bookmarks into it and presumably add your History if necessary.

If that does not work it does indicate something totally outside of Firefox is interfering. Possibly malware or security software.

I also have the same model lenovo and had the same issues as the poster. Maybe has to do with microsoft IE10 and perhaps MS update KB2670838?

I had the problem of Firefox hanging or running very slowly intermittently. I fixed it by disabling the Silverlight plugin.

When I got this problem after a Windows update last month, the only workaround was to disable the Flash Player's protected mode. My story: Flash hangs Firefox (eventually get script continue/stop dialog).

OK. Seems timtam5 was right. Getting rid of MS Silverlight did the trick. And I've rebooted a couple of time just to see if the hang ups still re-occur. (They always did after a fresh install of firefox 22.)

Bye bye, SIlverlight. For whatever reason MS, must have bad coded it so people might switch back to IE? ahhh, let me think... NO WAY... Firefox is just better.

No it does not work. I have installed Adobe Flash player plugins, Shockwave plugins and Silverlight plugins. But the problem still continues to exists. Installing and clean uninstalling also does not help. parent.lock continues to be created and remains after stopping the Firefox forefully by killing the process in Task Manager in Windows 7.

I have been having the same issue. Removing Silverlight did not work for me. The E430 I have has a finger print reader and out of curiousity I decided to disable it in Firefox startup sequence and this fixed this problem for me.
