A few weeks ago Facebook started acting strange in Firefox. I can't post or share anything. Basically I'm limited to liking. It's like the buttons just don't work. I've tried clearing my cache and deleting my cookies but the problem still persists. Any help would be appreciated.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Resetting Firefox according to these instructions and suggestions was the only means to resolving a problem that appeared on Facebook whereby JavaScript was not properly functioning and was probably (but unconfirmed) the reason why images (only text and URLs) would appear. IE9 worked without problems, but Firefox developed the issue without directly changing and settings within Facebook or Firefox. Several attempts to reinstall Firefox (with history and cookies and without), plus replacing Java (using both 32 and 64 bit versions) failed to resolve the problem -- although it didn't hurt the performance of the computer overall. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • it's not notifying me of when i get messages, alerts (the newest version of fb integrated into the Firefox browser), i have to select the fb icon in the area on the ff browser; and it says "not logged in" i hover over the messages it says "see all messages," and i hover over the notifications icons and it says "see all notifications." i select log in, and it logs me in in a newly opened browser, but it's still not working as it was at first (alerting me to messages, etc.) not sure what more to do?????

You can also first try some basic steps like these:

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (MAC)

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

did everything except the safe mode, when i reattempted i got:

"firefox is unable to connect with facebook messenger right now. Try again[, or] [c]lose this sidebar."

???????????? so what do you suggest i do now?????????? They should have left well enough alone and not integrated it (facebook messenger) into the firefox browser, this truly sucks! i loved it as a stand alone app!

There is a bug report about this and it states that Facebook is working on it, so you have to be patient for now.

  • bug 825264 - Unable to connect to Facebook Messenger right now

(please do not comment in bug reports: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html)

Edit: it looks that this has been fixed by Facebook, so it should be working now.

it's been OVER a week; and WHY they chose to integrate FB messenger into the browser is beyond me, it was a VERY BAD idea!!!!!!

cor-el's answer helped me to find my problem. I'd like to share in case it's helpful to someone else. In my case it was the Facebook Dashboard Plugin which I found following cor-el's instructions above.

My firefox hadn't just updated when it happened, but the last time I went to Facebook before the freezing up started, the desktop messenger auto-started for some reason when someone messaged me. It hadn't done that before. When I closed for the day, I exited out of that messenger using the icon on the bottom right of the computer screen. The next day, FB just continually froze up in firefox only. I don't know if maybe that plugin updated and I didn't notice and it has issues - or if there was another cause for it to stop working though.
