Firefox 17.0.1 Crashes (Windows 8), how to stop this from happening ALL the time.

Kuphostiwe

I have Windows 8 (full Version) and Firefox 17.0.1 on my laptop.

Firefox CONTINUOUSLY crashes. There are no error messages so I do not know the reason why. I have tried to uninstall FF and reinstall a fresh version and it still happens.

I clear my cache, history and cookies and it happens.

I would love to know why this is happening and/or what can be done to correct or stop this from happening.

That is a problem with the Flash plugin.

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

I have read thru everything however I am not very computer savvy when it comes to this type of stuff. I was able to disable the hardware acceleration... As for the rest, is there a user friendly version for the rest... one for dummies?

I can no longer run Firefox on my Windows 8 computer. It crashes and freezes within 10 seconds of starting. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and it's completely unusable.

I also want to add this is without opening a Flash site so i don't think Flash is the issue. I tried version 18 Beta, and it also crashes within seconds. I went back to version 16.0.2, and it works fine.

Hi dreamydaniel.

There is a problem on Windows 8 with Firefox 19 and AMD Radeon HD 6XXX/7XXX graphic display cards.

This issue is currently being investigated in bug 830531 (please do not comment in bug reports).

  • Bug 830531 - [Win8] crash in XPC_WN_Helper_NewResolve mainly with AMD Radeon HD 6290/6310/6320/7290/7310/7340

If you have one of those display cards then best is to stay with or downgrade to Firefox 18.0.2 for now or try the Firefox 20 beta version that doesn't seem to be affected.

My problem was "protected mode" in flash player. I also run a Radeon HD7800 card, but the bug concerning certain Radeon cards does not seem to affect me.

This is the solution that helped me, supplied by Cor-el. Go to:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Troubleshooting

Scroll down to "Disabling Protected Mode in Flash 11.3" and follow the instructions. It is just a matter of copying one file from the specified folder listed for your system (either 32 bit or 64, not both) to your desktop (or whatever folder you prefer) and opening it with "Notepad". Then type the extra line: ProtectedMode=0 and save it. Then go back to the original directory, rename the original file (I named it: mms-bak.cfg), and then copy your edited file into that directory. That's it. Then FIrefox should work, assuming your problem is the same that I had.
