I have had to revert to Firefox 12 because if I use Firefox 17 I cannot sign into eBay. Page says "not responding" I have always had all the new updates up to version 17, but obviously, if I can't sign into eBay there is no point in having version 17.

Try to clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I had the same problem with 17.0 (everything was fine with 16). Tried all the suggestions (cookies, safe mode, remove and reinstall Firefox, new profile, remove and reinstall my AV software) - NOTHING HELPED ! And to make matters worse, every time Firefox froze and I closed it, it would not start again, even though I terminated Firefox.exe in the task manager. (Had to reboot !!) Then 17.01 was put out last Friday and things seemed much better, but I still had the occasional freeze with log-in to either Ebay, PayPal of a financial site. I am now running 18.0 Beta, and so far so good (fingers crossed). Of course my Norton toolbar and Vulnerability Protection add-ons are disabled, but I can live with that. I am quite surprised that I have not seen more people complaining. Using Firefox with Ebay must be very common. The real killer is that the fault does not seem to be consistent or easily reproducible. Sometimes my log-in would work and other times Firefox would freeze. I am really pissed off at Firefox - I have wasted many many hours on this problem. I actually changed over to Internet Explorer until I thought of giving Firefox 18 a try.

Another possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Well I have been using Norton Internet Security and Firefox for several years and never had to mess with the firewall rules. I had no problem browsing any website. The problem only occurs when I try to input user name and password into a log-in (and even that was intermittent). As I said before, never had a problem until FF17, and never with Internet Explorer.

dazmoz,

My problem was caused by Trusteer Rapport banking security software. If you have that installed you could try stopping it and see if that helps. (Latest Firefox is 18.0.1 so you are up to date).

I had the same problem and after writing to Trusteer Rapport they very quickly responded by acknowledging that they knew about the problem and advised me to download their latest version of Rapport with this link

Hope this helps.

dazmoz,

If you upgraded to 19 beta then Trusteer Rapport has no doubt been disabled as Trusteer do not support beta versions. If you want to keep Trusteer working you must go back to 18.0.1 and update Trusteer with the link given by Eedie above.

Looks like we posted at the same time - seems you are OK now ?

I have 19 and I don't know what TRUSTEER is but Firefox DOES NOT WORK with Paypal, Ebay, and several other sites that have more than one layer of security. The problem is with Firefox. It does NOT track & deal with cookies exceptions reliably. Too bad, since it's a fast browser...but it's just not up to the tasks. IE must stay on my PC.

Hi roycefox

What kind of error do you see under the Technical Details on the SSL error page?

This is all very frustrating.... When I can't 'GET IN' to a site with Firefox, I usually just get spun around back to the log-in page for that site. To remedy this, most of the time, I open that site (or a page on that site) in IE, copy that URL of the successfully entered page, paste that URL into Firefox EXCEPTIONS, and then I can get in with Firefox.

Clearing the CACHE did get me entry into EBAY and its pages with the method above. Paypal is still an issue. The method above got me into my Paypal site, but then many of the pages WITHIN Paypal result in the attached image/message about rendering the page and re-directing.

This seems to be hit & miss for sites I enter.

AAfter we figure this one out (or not) I'll tell you about another site where I access .DWF files with IE but cannot bring them up with Firefox. (yes, I have a DWF viewer installed which functions perfectly in IE)

I want to stay with Firefox but too may sites that I must interact with are just not functioning well.

Followed the instructions.... Paypal seems to be allowing me to access everything freely, but Ebay is still an issue depending on what menu choices I make after I enter. I understand that many people have a problem with Ebay and it is not a priority, so Thanks for your help in getting me back on track.

If you are interested in another mystery, can you tell me why I can't view a DWF file from a web site that i can view in IE? I have the DWF file viewer downloaded but ti will not work.

Here is the site: http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/mynassauproperty/main.jsp it is a local Government site to view public records of properties. if you go to that link, click on PROPERTY SEARCH in the menu bar. Then click on I ACCEPT in the lower left On the next screen "LOCATE PARCEL" , enter the following in the upper half: SECTION: 37 BLOCK: 211 LOT: 354

These are the locator numbers for a random residential property in Nassau County, NY. When the property screen opens, click on the VIEW TAX MAPS picture. You should be able to view the county tax map for that property. in Firefox, I can view all the other selections...ENLARGE PHOTO, VIEW AREA MAP, PROPERTY SKETCH...but not the tax map. A download of the DWF viewer is available, and I already have it on my laptop, but it will not associate with Firefox. I tried downloading it again while IN firefox but that did not work, either.

Any ideas? Now THIS one would really make my life better!
