running firefox on linux. After system updates, .ASPX pages no longer recognised. How can I undo or fix?
I first saw this issue after automatic ubuntu updates about 2 weeks ago - Zorin Linux. Then yesterday, I built a new MINT Linux. Went straight to sverigesradio.se and when I clicked the EGET FONSTER link on the radio image at the bottom of the page, it worked OK - This was the offending .ASPX example I was having trouble with on the other pc. Next the PC received 243 automatic updates and today I have the same problem as the Zorin PC. When I try to open an ASPX link I am asked what application to use. Am I the only one in the world with this issue? No problem with Chrome. Thanks Maurice

Are you running Web Matrix Beta 2 under Wine?
Also try the User Agent Switcher extension, as some websites don't want to recognize the useragent strings for Linux Firefox installs.

Does it work if you do not use the poop-up window and open the Flash player at the bottom of the page?

The 'in-page' player works just fine.
I haven't run anything under wine (on either pc). I tried the User Agent Switcher but its "Not compatible with firefox 8" I also have a Puppy Linux with Firefox 8.0.1 which does NOT suffer from this problem. That makes me believe its an OS update that has broken it. Thanks for your help.
There seems to be a problem with the update and compatibility checking (it takes too long to finish the downloading), so can try again later or tomorrow.
User Agent was the problem. I may have inadvertantly marked this as solved a week ago. In fact, I only managed to verify yesterday. The issue was that the website in question sverigesradio.se did not recognise the new user agent string which starts with "(Ubuntu; X11; ...". This had previously been "(X11; .....". I found a workaround by modifying Firefox to reprot a user agent I copied from a Puppy Linux sys instead:
In Firefox address bar type: about:config Right-click, add, string: general.useragent.override
Paste in the modified version (simply switch x11 and ubuntu in the string) Et voila! I later found a note on sverigesradio.se with a link to a Ubuntu forum noting that several other sites had the same issue.
Thanks for instructions to: johnbokma.com/mexit/2004/04/24/changinguseragent.html No doubt there's a cleaner way to achieve this?
Thanks to all for tips and help. Maurice
Hi mmchugh,
I have tried to figure out how to enter this as you noted above: "In Firefox address bar type: about:config Right-click, add, string: general.useragent.override
Paste in the modified version (simply switch x11 and ubuntu in the string) Et voila! I later found a note on sverigesradio.se with a link to a Ubuntu forum noting that several other sites had the same issue. "
I Right-click; look for Add; look for string; and for general.useragent. of some sort. Two come up with "locale" and "compatMode.firefox" at the ends of the two I found.
Could you be more explicit with your instructions?
Thanks, Sharon
That pref doesn't exist by default, so you ned to create a new String pref with the name general.useragent.override and set the value to the user agent that you want.
You can find the current user agent on the Help > Troubleshooting Information page and either omit the Ubuntu part (Ubuntu;X11; -> X11;) or try to swap the two (X11;Ubuntu;)
Some info about this (you don't want to remove the UA, but merely change it)

Ooops. What you need to do is DELETE THE WORD UBUNTU so ignore the previous post and follow below. If anyone know how to delete my previous erroneous post, please do so. Thanks.
To Enable .aspx on some sites after upgrading Mozilla Firefox:
Specifically: Firefox 9.0.1 for Linux
- 1 In the Menu bar box where a URL appears, type about:config Click to agree that you will be careful
Opposite Filter, type extensions.update.notifyUser When it appears, right-click and Reset
Close Firefox, re-open then after agreeing again, make sure that this appears: extensions.update.enabled
- 2 In Mozilla Firefox 9.0.1 for Linux, go to Help> Troubleshooting Info>
Go to User-agent and find something similar to:
Mozilla/5.0 (Ubuntu; X11; Linux i686; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1
- 3 Type about:config and agree, etc. then Right-click in a white space somewhere in the body below and choose New> String> and for Pref Name, type: general.useragent.override
You'll be asked for a Value so Enter your UserAgent which looked something similar to #1 above BUT THIS TIME, DELETE “UBUNTU”:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1
- 4 Restart Firefox and you will be able to get into any site which uses .aspx
