How can I reduce the size of the address bar in the navigation toolbar?

The address (URL) bar in the Firefox navigation toolbar occupies at least 3/4 of the entire toolbar. I don't need this much space, especially since I can enter terms longer than the length of the address bar as needed. How can I reduce the size of this address bar so the remainder of the icons etc. are not so cramped?
