It is my personal laptop and I know my install passwords but do not understand why it's giving me this message when trying to copy the new Firefox over the old Firefox application I currently have (vers. 3.0.3).

Any suggestions? I'm also concerned about all my organized bookmarks, would those totally be lost in the replacing of the software?

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

You don't need to Copy New Firefox over the Old Firefox. Just Update Firefox.

Open Firefox -> go to Help Menu -> About Firefox -> click "Check for Updates"

it will update to the latest version of your platform.

For some odd reason it has the "Check for Updates" gray'ed-out under the Help Menu. It's there but it won't let me select it. Other thoughts?

I thought it would auto-update like it used to but for some reason it has stopped cold on 3.0.3

Download the latest version from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/

Your Bookmarks will not be lost if you Update Firefox.

But unfortunately that puts me right back to where I started when I got that first "This operation cannot be completed..." note. Yargh, I think I'm switching over to Safari....only problem is I would have to re-enter many of the links...yay.

Hooray! That totally worked, and you're right, the bookmarks and misc. data updated and followed right along. Thanks for you help! Much appreciated!
