when i click on embedded email link on web page, it won't open email like it did before

I used to be able to click on an email link in a web page, and it would open gmail and i could type away. Now it only shows the email address in bottom corner and i have to copy and open email, then past address and type email. Nothing i've read matches this. I set email to Gmail under Options>applications>mailto, but that didn't work either. I downloaded the gmail add-on, still no luck. Help!
