Firefox won't save cache. When I exit and re-open Firefox, EVERYTHING has to reload. I have Firefox set to remember all settings (History, Cookies, Cache) and the cache is set to 1024MB.

My add-ons are listed as enabled in 'Troubleshooting Information', but I've tried it with them all disabled and the problem still occurs.

Click the Firefox button, go to Options | Options | Privacy. Is "Clear history when Firefox closes" checkmarked?

Like I said, Firefox is set to remember all settings, including history.

OK, but some users forget that setting, so I had to check.

So go to the Advanced menu instead and then in the Network tab. What figure is displayed there for offline storage at the moment?

Also, if you try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode (do some browsing), does that change anything in that menu?

lol again, like I said, cache is set to 1024MB. Running in Safe Mode doesn't change anything.

Are you using cleanup software like CCleaner that can cause this to happen?

Is Firefox using the cache (look on the about:cache page)?

Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Uncheck: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

So by creating a new profile, I'm basically starting with Firefox from scratch? I'd rather not to that until we've exhausted all other options...

CCleaner isn't set to clean Firefox.

The cache logs items, but it starts over from scratch when I exit and then open Firefox again.

Here are my Privacy settings - http://i.imgur.com/PZWoQ.jpg I can't find any combinations in which this doesn't happen.

In your screenshot, the option to save browsing history isn't checkmarked. That's where the problem lies.

Did you check the cache usage on the about:cache page?

Clearing the Browsing History shouldn't have any effect on the cache.

Is your question about session restore and reopening files from the previous session?

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

In that case clearing or disabling the history won't reopen those pages the next time.

Are you using CCleaner?

Xircal - it doesn't change no matter what buttons I check/not check. I've tried checking the save browsing history option.

cor-el - No, I'm not talking about restoring sessions. Just any time I exit Firefox, then open it up again, none of the images from the sites I frequent are loaded. They have to load again, after every time I open Firefox again. I use CCleaner, but it isn't set to clean Firefox data.

What does about:cache show before you close Firefox and after closing and starting Firefox ?

more options

After browsing for a while, it shows everything that should normally be in the cache. A big list of pictures and whatnot. When I close Firefox then open it again, everything is gone.

Are you using Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the cache if you close Firefox?

Did you check if Firefox closes properly?

If Firefox thinks that it has crashed or didn't close properly then the cache might get purged because the index and mapping tables are kept in memory and may not have been saved.

The only thing I'm doing is hitting the 'X' button. I don't 'Clear Recent History' or do anything else that I would think would give Firefox the impression that it crashed.

Do you see any files in the cache folder disappearing after you close Firefox?

You can see the location of the cache on the about:cache page.
You can do a search for all files (*.*) in that location to see all files in the many sub folders that are currently used to store files on disk.

The cache folder in my profile folder stays the same size when I close and reopen Firefox. But to clarify again, the list in about:cache reverts to default.

Wow, I managed to fix it. The cache folder was 400MB, but Firefox was showing it as far, far less. First I tried to use 'Clear Recent History...' to forget the cache. Checked my Cache folder and it was still the same size. Opened up CCleaner and had it empty the cache. Viola, Cache folder is gone. Now I open Firefox, go to a few sites, and close Firefox. When I open it back up again, it remembered my cache! Now under about:cache, there are three options - Memory Cache Device, Disk Cache Device, and Offline Cache device. Before I used CCleaner, the only things under about:cache were Memory Cache Device and Offline Cache Device.

So I managed to fix it, but would anyone have any ideas what might have caused it?

Congrats, lucky to you... i have tried using new profile, DEFAULT FF4 installation, no add-on. But CAN SOMETIMES happen to me, when closing firefox it has chance to lose all cache i have loaded. Very noticeable when caching loading from youtube or flash based game.

Tried with older 3.6 Firefox and everything is cached fine even when i close and restart firefox repeatedly.

I close firefox carefully and not forcing them to close, so my last thought is somewhere wrong in Firefox 4 build.... BUGS anyone????

I have a problem with flash games as well:

This website:

http://www.kongregate.com - or - armorgames

I set privacy to remember history. No private browsing Cleared off all the cache and tried again.

Yet, for Firefox 5.0, the flash reloads every time I enter the website.

Anyone can help?
