I have just obtained a new PC and installed Windows 7 Ultimate in 64 Bit. And as is usual for me DESPITE backing up etc the whole shebang blew up in my face! the back up failed and I had to re-install again! So question is I have the OLD operating system on the OLD HD so I can find things. So how do I find the old bookmarks etc. and move same to my NEW HD and so enjoy my old settings? Indeed is it possible to install AL of the old settings from the older copy of Firefox on my old drive? If so and it is a relatively easy thing to do please feel free to ridicule me but do at least offer to help? :-)

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Is ANYONE able to help please?? I have searched and better searched and nothing seems to help me out! certainly nothing I can find in the Mozilla question base nor a Google search?? I have also searched by using the "jason" title in the open this file search on all drives and still cannot find this rather elusive bookmarks folder!

PLEASE someone must be able to help??

No, that file won't help you.

Look for your Firefox Profile folder on the old HDD, and copy specific files from the old Profile folder and replace the new version of each file in the new Profile folder. This support article will explain it more completely.

Don't do anything with files in the Firefox program folder or you will have to reinstall Firefox.

@ cor-el sorry if I appear KEEN! But at my age I don't have one heck of a lot of time left eh? :-) And sorry if I gave that impression.

@ the-edmeister Looking now Mr Meister!

Sorry, did all of that and all to no avail whatsoever!

I have had a look and ALL dates on the files in the old folders are correct. I.E. 19/3/11 for the OLD firefox folder. But I simply cannot copy over the data? One other thing I have noticed is that I have NO Icon associated with Firefox either? And I am able to add one it does not appear after I come out of the properties folder?? Could this also be something to do with why I cannot get this seemingly simple fix to work?

Ah well so much for ALL the "Super Heroes" eh? I had two have a quick look and even they seem to have gone to help someone MORE requiring of there help? Sorry if I sound a tad ungrateful, I assure you I am not. But once upon a time I would have come along and helped and been helped on this forum. No longer it appears??

Just the way of the world nowadays??

What was the Operating System on the old computer?

Did you find all the files that you want to restore from that previous version?

Thank you for your reply cor-el. To reply to your question in all honesty I would have to say, no I did not find the files. The reason being none of the proposed seemed to fit the problem insofar as they offered a resolution? That and the fact that some of the proposed solutions certainly did not fit around my problem? I am using Windows 7 64 bit and my old system was Windows 7 32 bit. And I am certainly NOT proud of the afore posted reply. But it just seems there is a certain "Apathy" at present surrounding Mozilla? I am or have been trying now for at least 5 days to download the latest fix to Firefox? The server has been thus far unreachable? And any attempt at contacting anyone about this also has seemingly fallen on VERY deaf ears. Now I am NOT a technical person with software etc. Hardware I am OK with as an Engineer. But we all have our limits eh? So it is with great pleasure I can say THANK you to you cor-el for at least coming back and offering some help. even if this does not get sorted at least you HAVE tried! But to date, no I have not managed to effect an answer. And believe you em I have tried! But maybe the different O/S is the problem?

Right, had a GOOD look and realised I had to show hidden files and folders as well! (Numpty me!) But there is CERTAINLY No folder named "places.sqlite" in any of the folders, not anywhere!!!

Would this be the problem?? It has been somehow overwritten?

Chris

where are you missing the file places.sqlite?

On the old computer or on the new computer?

Do both computers have the same Firefox 3.6.x version ?

Be sure to look in the correct location (not in Local or Local Settings):

  • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

The old one! I have a file as I said called: sqlite3.dll (dated) 27.03.2011 so it is about right datewise. I do have the sqlite file on this the new 'puter.

And SORRY about the "chucking the toys!" incident above! Just me and my bodily functions I'm afraid! (old, diabetic, crap in my life :-)) I DO appreciate your help and would reciprocate if you had any bother with your Fishing or Wanted to install a kitchen. We are ALL good at something eh?

Mine si NOT computers! :-)

That is the DLL in the Firefox program folder that Firefox to manage SQLite files.

The Firefox Profile Folder is in a location that Windows hides by default and is not in the Firefox program folder where you have looked.

You can click this button to go to the profile folder :

Don't forget this is on an OLD disk? And if I open anything from that disk it automatically opens the newest installation of Fire Fox. So I cannot actually enter the settings like that? I can do what you say and have indeed done that. But on another thread I was asked to look at it tells me to go to the OLD folder and uncheck the hide all hidden files and folders.

Look cor-el, I think this is a dead duck?? I don't think I am EVER going to get those files back at all! I mean I moved over the old files in the first place into the new windows and still they don't show? I have tried looking at ALL of the fixes you and Mr meister have shown me and still no good. I reckon it's time to say "Thank you" but I will go away and kick my PC around the room a little and forget all about EVER getting the files back eh? I can only say I REALLY do appreciate your input, but I think this is like me a lost cause? I have done this before and could not find the files and so it really is my own fault as I SHOULD do a backup of the actual files! I HAVE done a backup and the old files are there as well? But seems nothing is going to turn back the wheels of time eh? I WISH! Thanks again, but time to leave the party and let you get on with helping someone worthy of your talents?

If you can still run Firefox on the old computer then you can export the bookmarks to an HTML file to merge bookmarks or create a JSON backup that will replace all bookmarks.

I can ACCESS the old drive, but it is a part of this new PC. I have it as a slave drive so as to be able to copy over items. This has NOT seemingly worked as the details have copied over but NOT the actual programmes. I also backed it all up on a separate drive also. that also will not migrate to the new drive?? So if I go into Firefox on the old drive all it does is default to the new PC's settings. and so all I see are this Pc's files as book marks go. Some one REALLY does not want me to succeed in this mission I can tell you! BUT if you think we CAN do something I am still more than willing to take instructions! I just didn't want you to be wasting time with an old fart like me when you could get on with something more worthwhile is all. I'll take my lead from your good self.

Make sure that you can access hidden files and folders.

Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders"
To see the file extensions of all files uncheck the box "Hide extensions for known file types"

  • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Can't do that! The drive is NOT a bootable drive! I.E. it is mounted in the PC as an extra drive (by use of a docking station?) So I cannot access control Panel? IS there a way to do this on the drive itself? OR am I being deliberately stupid and if I show ALL hidden files on my main C: drive it will flow down to the rest of ALL drives on the PC??

Chris

more options

Yes, that is a global setting and applies to all drives.

AppData (Application Data) is a hidden folder and for a slave drive you definitely need to be able to browse hidden folders.
