After the computer has been switched on for a while and I try to access the internet - it fails to do so and the message I get is : -General Failure - followed up by the specific address/site which it cannot open. This is happening with increasing frequency especially when I try to open email links etc. I then switch off the computer and after a few minutes or even half and hour, i reboot and it then becomes possible to open whatever was not possible before. This is quite irritating however.

To confirm that it is not an Internet connection issue, you must try with another browser.

Is this the same with Internet Explorer and any other browsers installed???

I only use Firefox. Have not used Internet Explorer for a number of years. By the way: - following the General Failure notice, it then gives the Url address that it could not access and adds ' that the system could not find file specified'. Thank you.

Thank you for the suggestion and having tried it with other browsers, I can now confirm that it only happens with FF. I like FF a lot and hate to bother with other browsers but it I have to, I will most reluctantly abandon it. By the way, having downloaded 36 of your recommended ADD-ONS, I had to get rid of them(uninstall). They not only cluttered up the start-up page but noticeably slowed down the computer. ( I left about half a dozen). Moreover, what is the point of them unless there is an icon or a button that I can click on for instant access to an ADD_ON. Instead I had to search hard to access the ones that I wanted and even then was unable to engage them. For example, I download clocks and a currency converter but was unable to use them.

I have the same issue. It doesn't happen with IE. I can't even open FF now. Please help?

Solved the problem by switching over to Chrome when FF gets stuck. The only solution that works.

Greetings Forum, I'm having the same issues with Ff and email too. Couldn't stay with 4.0--issues with Norton 360 5.5 toolbar, this won't be resolved until May. After reverting back to Ff 3.6 it solved that issue for now. But as of 3/31/2011, I've had nothing but chaos! Can't login to email through Ff. Last night I had no home page. fitsoma is correct, I can login using igoogle. Spent the day yesterday with tech. help from email provider, it's not them, because I can access with google, so that means it's Ff. Does anyone know what's happening or has anyone had contact with Ff or an explanation? Not only is this inconvenient, it's costing me and "eating" way too much of my time!

Thank you for the confirmation J Mac. My specific problem with FF4 is that when I try to search the web the browser gets hi-jacked by ASK.com. I have now removed it but it has made no difference i.e. it still does exactly the same thing. I am therefore returning to the previous version of FF in frustration.

Found following articles that AVG also not compatible with FF4 update: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080512192747AAHDZtL

I was also having an issue with outlook and syncing my iPhone with iTunes new update so total mess. Above link did stop General Failure message but then did system restore and problem is back. I'm going to try and revert to 3.6 cuz probem definitely started with FF4 update
