why does firefox run so slowly sometimes and then at the normal speed at other times?

Every few days firefox runs very slowly. It takes at least 5 to 10 minutes just to boot up the home page and then forever to log into any web site after that.

When I go to any other site that does not require going through firefox everything runs at the regular speed.

What's up? Should I be looking at going back to microsoft???
