Why won't Adobe Flash Player work on Firefox?

I am currently running Firefox 3.6.12 on Windows XP on an Acer laptop. Adobe Flash Player won't work through Firefox and sites say: "This plugin has been disabled" or "You need the latest Adobe Flash Player"-- I have updated it every time (changing the player version to "Other Browswers"). Flash has proven to work in the past but I'm not sure why it no longer does.

Also, I get this Error every time I open Firefox. I have to attempt to open Firefox 3 times in order for it to finally open because of this error:

getPlusPlus_Adobe_reg.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminated the program

Flash is however, working on Internet Explorer. I have tried uninstalling every Flash Player and reinstalling it for Firefox. I've resorted to enabling every video type of player on Firefox in an attempt to get videos and games working...

"Plugin Finder Service" gives me the option to install missing plugins for Adobe Flash Player 10.1.85 which results in this error:

"FP_PL_PFS_INSTALLER-1.exe - Application Error" The exception unknown software exception (0xc06d007e) occurred in the application at location 0x7c81eb33.

(And when I manually attempt to install (an option available after it fails), the "getPlusPlus_Adobe_reg.exe - Application Error" reappears.)

First, you do not need getPlus, it causes problems for many users

Second, the ActiveX version is for IE only. Firefox and other browsers use the plugin version. Follow the instructions below to update Adobe Flash (aka Shockwave Flash).

This did not help since I already have the latest Shockwave Flash installed. I cannot locate getPlus on my computer and the links provided did not a) work b) show me how to remove it. I don't know how it was downloaded (through what program) and so I don't know how to continue said download for it to "automatically delete itself".

And the other links sends me to the "The Plugin Finder Service window" problem which I cannot complete.

From the second link, , read the part that I changed to bold/underlined below:

  • How do I uninstall getPlus® from my computer?
    • getPlus® automatically deletes itself after successful download and installation of the downloaded product. In some case the getPlus® plug-in deletion process is interrupted and although the plug-in is (technically) already uninstalled, it is still listed in the installed program list. In order to complete uninstall of getPlus®, please close your browser window first. Then go to your Control Panel/Add and Remove Programs and remove getPlus® manually. Afterwards you can either press F5 to refresh or after the next (re)start of your computer getPlus® will be gone. (Note from Helper7677: restart your computer after removal)

It was downloaded, most likely, when you updated an Adobe product. One of the problems with getPlus is that it, in fact, does not always automatically delete itself. That is why the developer NOS Micro gives the additional instructions on how to remove it (bold/underlined instructions above). You avoid it by following the exact instructions that I posted.

Best advice, when you get a warning on a web site that something needs to be updated, stop and go to the web site of the developer of the product to get the update to insure that you are getting the genuine article.

For updating Adobe Reader, when needed, follow these instructions to avoid getPlus:

  1. Update Adobe Reader (PDF plugin):
    • From within your existing Adobe Reader (if you have it already installed):
      • Open the Adobe Reader program from your Programs list
      • Click Help > Check for Updates
      • Follow the prompts for updating
      • If this method works for you, skip the "Download complete installer" section below and proceed to "After the installation" below
    • Download complete installer (if you do NOT have Adobe Reader installed):
      • Use Firefox to download and SAVE the installer to your hard drive from the link in the article below
      • On the Adobe page, un-check any extra items (i.e. Free McAfee® Security Scan Plus) then click Download button
      • If you see message just under tabs, DO NOT click the Allow button, instead click below that where it says "click here to download".
      • Click "Save to File"; save to your Desktop (so you can find it)
      • After download completes, close Firefox
      • Click the installer you just downloaded and allow the install to continue
        • Note: Vista and Win7 users may need to right-click the installer and choose "Run as Administrator"

I've spent some time going over this and figuring out how to execute these steps on my computer. I failed to specify last time that "getPlus" was not under my Control Panels\Add and Remove Programs. So far, I have only been able to disable it under Firefox's Tools\Add-ons\Plugins and deleting it from Mozilla's folder under the Program Files (np_gp.dll).

After doing so, I went back to your previous post and attempted to redo these steps. However, now whenever I try to download Adobe Flash Player through the link you provided (, it downloads and when I open it, it states that this is an older version of flash and tells me to visit the site for the most recent version. I do not get an option for downloading. I have not been able to find a version of Flash to download that does not direct me to Adobe's getPlus Adobe Flash.

I have also updated Adobe Reader and am looking into any other Adobe product I may have that needs to be updated.

I had the same issue with Firefox 3.6.13. The solution was to go to Tools > Add-ons > Click on Plugins Tab. Then I enabled Shockwave Flash and Shockwave for Director.

That seemed to clear the problem.

I found 2 helpful things to work:

1) If you installed adobe flash player several times (as I did) trying to get it to work, first uninstall all these versions by downloading the flash uninstaller at uninstall_flash_player.exe (for more directions see and using the uninstaller.

2) Then make sure you download the correct version (plug-in) of the adobe flash player from mozilla firefox site at You can also check to make sure this is the right copy (and that you got it downloaded) at This fixed it for me. Also, make sure you didn't get too fancy a version of shockwave (like the directors) - if you did, just disable it.

I have this problem but in my case it is URGENT .......U R G E N T ........because it is my work computer.

My Flash Player is up to date. The plugins are up to date. Adobe will not let me replace it. I get NO error messages. All flash items simply do not load. This is my work computer and I need this to be working first thing monday morning (2nd April 2012) when the office opens! Anything less is unacceptable. I cannot upgrade to FF 4 because I did that at home and the intallation lost all my bookmarks. I cannot afford to have FF delete some 400 work bookmarks on Monday. And I do not have 2-3 spare hours at work to search and re-save them. Please advise URGENTLY how I can get flash player to work on Firefox 3.6.28 on Monday morning.

None of this works... I am switching to an inferior but working browser until I get notification that the bug is fixed. The plugin doesnt work, the vids dont play. Someone needs to fix this before another 640 people report the same problem. There are probably thousands of people who have the same problem and who might find the same solution as me the best!

Uninstall Flash player. Restart your pc. Then, download and install it (I'm assuming you are running Windows). also make sure you are running Firefox 11.

You can verify on the about:plugins page, via the location bar, if Firefox finds the plugin.

You can check on the Adobe test page if the plugin is detected and working.

I am using Firefox 13, I found that the latest version of flash (13) doesn't install the plug-in properly, so I had to revert to adobe flashplayer 12. The way I did this was uninstalling flash altogether and then reinstalling the plug-in. It worked for me, not sure whom all this will help

Firefox just released their 13.0.1 update and it should be automatically loaded in the next FF update. It seems to have solved the problem with least, it did for me.

It is a good idea, though, once the update is done, to restore the original Protected Mode settings and reenable Protected Mode. Simply follow the instructions listed for editing the mms.cfg file (removing the "ProtectedMode=0" line), and then saving. Be sure to run what editor you are using (I used Notepad++) in administrator mode.

It may have taken a while, but at least Firefox listened and responded. Thanks, guys.
