How to import bookmarks from www.xmarks.com 'add on' of firefox which is going to close shortly?

more options

Today I got a message from www.xmarks.com that it is going to stop it's bookmarks synchronization service "XMARKS" add-on firefox from 10th Jan 2011. How should I import my stored bookmarks on www.xmarks.com to "FIREFOX SYNC" add-on? I could not find any option to import it in TOOLS -> SYNC -> PREFERENCES. Neither it's mentioned on xmarks.

Or probably it gets synchronized automatically?

There is no need to import them from Xmarks, the bookmarks will already be on your computer in your Firefox profile. Firefox Sync will use those bookmarks.

Yeah Firefox sync already has all your bookmarks, that was clear to me but I do wonder if Firefox has a website like "xmarks.com" that we could log into in order to add/organize bookmarks there. Sometimes I'm using public and/or school computers that are running other browsers...

wdgrain,

No, Firefox Sync doesn't have a web interface where you can add or organize your Bookmarks. All your data that goes to the Sync server is encrypted and can't be read by anything else. The encryption key is your Secret Phrase in Firefox Sync on your PC/s.

Sync was created for protecting Firefox user data by encryption when that data is anywhere except on the users PC, whereas Xmarks was created to share the Bookmarks user data in multiple ways.

The only solution I can think of right now, is to export your bookmarks in HTML format on to a USB stick, and plug that USB stick into another PC and use File > Open File... to view that bookmarks.html file like a web page in any browser.

I had to have my Pc restored to factory defaults and lost my bookmarks file as I did not have it backed up. Is there anyway I can get them from XMarks sync as I had that add-on in place before I had to reimage my pc?

That's really a procedural question for Xmarks support. Have you tried installing the Xmarks extension and connecting to the Xmarks server to sync your data to the new Firefox installation?

As you can see, the Xmarks is still alive!!! Hopefully such an important add-on won't stop providing service. To add all the bookmarks you added to xmarks go to Tools(Mozilla FF Browser)--> Xmarks--> Synchronize Now. That's it.
