Hi Anabel.

You may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Yes, I did uninstall them already. The first time I tried to bookmark (when I realised the problem) The massage was something like: There maybe another program using...(don't remember the file) so is blocking firefox from using bookmarks (something on these lines). But Did not have any program open...

I don't mind reinstall firefox . But I'd like to recover my bookmarks really...Export, obviously doesn't work because it's empty. So please help me to recover the bookmarks!

I have a more clear question. Where can I find the firefox folde to back it up before i install a new version?

When I click on the icon in the applications folder, it doesn't seem to contain any other files. It's only the icon that you click to open the application. So wonder wher the firefox files are stored in a mac. Thanks

In Firefox 3.6 you can use: Help > Troubleshooting Information > Open Containing folder - see also Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues

Another way is this: Copy and Paste this code in the Code field in the "Tools > Error Console" and click the Evaluate button to see the location of the profile folder. alert(Components.classes["@mozilla.org/file/directory_service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIProperties).get("ProfD", Components.interfaces.nsIFile).path);

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Mac: /Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/

Installing a new Firefox version won't touch your Firefox Profile Folder, so you probably won't need to restore any data, but having a backup of your profile data is always recommended.

I did not find a file named places.sqlite, but I could find urlclasifier3.sqlite (and index.sqlite on the offline folder). Is this file the one I am supposed to back up to keep my bookmarks?

So if i install a new version of firefox would it solve the problem of bookmarking?

more options

No, the file urlclassifier3.sqlite is the phishing protection database file.

Do other sqlite files work, like the cookies (cookies.sqlite) and the passwords (signons.sqlite)?

these files do not exist in the profile folder (don't come up when I do a search either) but when i open a page like my email pg it remembers me so it must be keeping the info somewhere...

Did you try the code in the Tools > Error Console that I posted above to locate the Firefox Profile Folder ?

Thanks, I did reinstall firefox and the same message came up: bookmarks and history will not be funcional because another application is using one of firefox files, may be caused by a security application.

I use mac so don't have any antivirus or anything like that and don't have anyother app open. Is there any way to find out what application is causing the problem?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems. See [[Basic Troubleshooting|#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting:Make a new profile]]

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files). Maybe not copy places.sqlite, but restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
