If this is an IMAP account, it's not unusual. Thunderbird periodically saves the draft (depending on settings) and when message is sent, the last used draft is deleted - but that may leave several older copies to be manually removed. This is not a new issue. It usually surfaces for a user when spending a lot of time drafting a message.
