Somehow, my desktop started showing a beautiful scenic picture, that it changes several times per day. I can right click and get more information about the picture, but I find no way to turn this off. It not only is distracting, but often the lack of contrast make folders on my desktop hard to read.

That's a Windows OS setting not something from Firefox browser. You need to look at Windows help support for this Wallpaper settings and changes.
