Finally figured it out.

I hate new versions of FIrefox. I hate playing hide-and-seek. That's why I lock out new versions. They're a damn nuisance.

I did print.tab_modal.enabled = false and that’s even worse—the “system dialog box” only allows selection of a printer and Print but no access to the PRINTER dialog box:

That pref is very outdated and forgotten. You can use the system print dialog in version 102 (bug 1712104).

One particular example: the “awesome bar” is one of the dumbest things ever—a URL to a known address is a completely different thing than a search for an unknown page. Mixing the two together just wastes time with things I have to back out and do over.

You can choose to not mix things. Everything is in the Settings -> Search.

Another example: the PDF and DOCX viewers added around 2010. They’ve never worked reliably. In 2008 or so, it was easy to tell Firefox to “when I click on a PDF, open the PDF in Acrobat in a Firefox window.” That’s gotten harder and harder and less and less reliable. Simple fact: Mozilla has no expertise in either of these. You can’t get it right. So make it easy to get to an application that can!

We don't have a docx viewer. Setting up PDF actions is fairly easy for an experienced user.
