Previously, with older versions of Firefox, clicking on a wave file would open the wave file in the windows application that is registered for opening wave files. This was also the behavior with other audio files.

Now, it only offers to download the file which is incorrect behavior, the file just is needed for now and after now has passed, there is not reason to keep the file on the computer.

How do I restore the proper behavior.

Did you do this to fix it yet?

Look at how it started at: about:config and go from there.

WARNING from the moderator team: Changing Firefox pref from the about:config page can sometimes break Firefox or cause strange behavior. You should only do this if you know what you're doing.

Please read Firefox advanced customization and configuration options to learn more.

Version 98, among other changes, altered Always ask to Save in Settings > General > Files & Applications > Applications so you should check those settings and change them to what you want. There is a preference you can change to reverse the changes (as posted above) but that will only have a temporary effect. If version 100 is the first you have installed since the changes were made, that is why you are only seeing them now.

The only lasting changes you can make are to destination folders. More on that if you want it.

That restored the correct behavior, thank you very much.

Note that it isn't recommended to disable that improvements_to_download_panel pref as such a pref is only there for a short time to allow the devs to control the development of those improvements. It will be removed in the future leaving you with problem once again.

In Firefox 97 and 98 there have been changes to the download panel.

It is not an improvement if it breaks existing expected behavior.

Where do I report this bug.

I do find this hard to believe as Chrome and Edge doesn't make such changes.

This is why mozilla/Firefox will loose more users when this happens - this will happen it's only a matter of time when users find out - they will Stop Updates at the last version Firefox that users can make the about:config and will find online blocks like I did to stop future updates from happening. I will be one of many that will go this route.

I've tried it - that is worse you have to make each individual switch and not something I want to do on daily basis. That is why this change - in the about:config makes it permanent and works I verified the change I did on 98 and remains in 100.0.2 and works. More choosing how to save it does save to where it goes and open the correct software to open files.

The only people this benefits is malware/virus which will download and install or .exe files will install and the user will have no idea it did so. This is why this change is a Security Flaw allowing malware and malicious sites to install malware and tracker and the user will have no idea what they clicked on.

The changes were deliberate. Two bug reports about specific points are to be fixed in version 101. I think you will be wasting your time but the site is https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

You don't seem to understand the magnitude of this issue.

People like me have a reason to open a file from the internet without needing to save it first, it saves frustrations and headaches when it doesn't do this because then we have to take additional steps to ensure that the news is aired on time and that audio reports are delivered to our audience without delay.

It could mean the difference between life and death.
