Import Email From Linux Mint Mate 20.3 to Thunderbird 91.5
Import Email from Linux Mint Mate 20.3 to Thunderbird 91.5. I have been working on this problem since Dec 2021. And I want and need to preserve those emails that have a lot of history, personal and financial. You're help is most important. I have been at a number of Web sites that stated they could help but after some time it became apparent it was all out dated. What I am dealing with is now, I need you're help.
Please keep on mind I am not a Linux Professional. Do not confuse me please.
Thunderbird 91.5. Help, More Trouble Shooting Information, Information Profile Directory Open /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release Select Mail Select Profiles Select Mint Thunderbird Select nt3r4mao.degault-202111105-1529 Select Mail Select Local Folders Now you see all the Email I wish to import INTO T-Bird 91.5
Linux Mint Mate 20.3 /home/donald/Documents/Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/Mail Local Folders Now you see all those Mail Folders I wish to Import Into Thunderbird 91.5
I have a new download Thunderbird 91.6 but I am concerned that the Emails that I have accumulated in 91.5 would be lost. Don't want that. Thank you so much for you're time and effort to solve this problemthat.
Additional Comment and hopefully use full. I have been with Linux Mint, and Ubunto (I know bad spelling) for some time. And when I did a new install that Email mail was always imported in to the NEW Thunderbird. Before this fiasco I was using Linus Mint Cinnamon 17.3 with Thunderbird 60.6.1. It worked perfectly. AND now you can imagine how I feel. Did I make a mistake?
I would appreciate an Acknowledgment that this has been received Please.

Import Email from Linux Mint Mate 20.3 to Thunderbird 91.5.
This is where it starts getting confusing already. What does this mean, and what are you trying to achieve in the first place?
/home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release
This looks like a Thunderbird profile. If this is the default profile, Thunderbird would start with it automatically, regardless of which version you're running. There is nothing you have to import in the first place. Note, that downgrading Thunderbird to an older version will almost certainly cause problems with the profile. It is therefore recommended to backup the profile on a regular basis, and particularly prior to Thunderbird upgrades. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
Select Mail Select Profiles Select Mint Thunderbird Select nt3r4mao.degault-202111105-1529
What is this supposed to tell me?
Now you see all the Email I wish to import INTO T-Bird 91.5
Not really.
I have a new download Thunderbird 91.6 but I am concerned that the Emails that I have accumulated in 91.5 would be lost.
They won't. See above.
And when I did a new install that Email mail was always imported in to the NEW Thunderbird.
No, the new version just picked up the existing profile.
Before this fiasco ...
What are you talking about?
Did I make a mistake?
May be, but it isn't clear what you did do in the first place. See if this article helps. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data

I thank you so much for you're rapid response. I had to take a day to formulate a response that I hope makes sense.
What I am trying to achieve is have those Emails held in Linux Mint 20.3 /home/donald /documents/Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird//nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/MailMail Local Folders
And those Emails held in Thunderbird 91.5 Select Help, Select More Trouble Shooting Information, See Information Profile Directory select Open, /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release.
Select Mail Select Profiles Select Mint Thunderbird Select nt3r4mao.default-20211105-1529 Select Mail Selct Local Folders They both hold the same Emails. They are Identical.
Both of these above entities hold the mails that I need. And when I go to Tools import nothing happens. The selections now are blank, the selection Boxes are grayed out. When first tried, the Boxes were open and I could make a selection. And the response was unable to locate. The Emails that are held by the above entities do not appear.
On the other hand after Mint Mate 20.3 was installed Fire Fox had all of my Book Marks and I mean all my Book Marks that I had accumulated over the years that I had Mint & Ubuntu. It was amazing.
re:Information Profile Directory Open /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release Select Mail Select Profiles Select Mint Thunderbird Select nt3r4mao.degault-202111105-1529 Select Mail Select Local Folders
This directory sounds wrong. .thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird etc It sounds like you have copied the following from old Mint backup: Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird//nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/MailMail Local Folders and pasted it into: .thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail folder.
To fix: Thunderbird 91.5. Help, More Trouble Shooting Information, Information Profile Directory Open /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release
Exit Thunderbird.
In the new .thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail folder - Delete the Profiles folder. Leave this open showing contents of Mail folder - this where you will paste the correct folder.
Then in the old mint backup, access: Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird//nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/Mail folder and copy the 'Local Folders' folder
Back in the new .thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail folder which you left open. Paste the copied 'Local Folders' folder into the 'Mail' folder So you now have: .thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail/Local Folders
Start Thunderbird.
I had what I thought was to a degree what you had done and when I went to Post reply there was an error and all that I had done was gone. I was trying to reconstruct but no dice. So I have taken you're Email and step by step do what you have suggested.
Paragraph 1 there is only one Mail not -1529/MailMaill otherwise it is identical. I didn't do that. I had removed xqfvqvc and inserted nt3r4maO. Now I felt that both were Profiles were the same. No. The Profile had a new xqxfvqzc with all that was attached to nt3r4maO.default-20211105 etc;. Next I tried to Import and the Wizard did not respond all grayed out. So lets try this I thought I will do the opposite in place of the. Mint 20.3 /home/donald/documents/Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/ here I replaced nt3r4maO with xqfvqvc.
Now when I go to import nothing happens and all Boxes are grayed out. I went back to Thunder Bird and More Trouble shooting and the Profile had changed on it own with the xqxfvqzc new profile and all that still follows with the nt3r4maO and so on.
Now Paragraph To Fix: Done. Next Para. This will be done in home/donald/Documents/Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders. And you want me to delete all after Email Back Up? Or just remove Profiles. This all a little vague so I will wait for you're next email.
re :Next Para. This will be done in home/donald/Documents/Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders. And you want me to delete all after Email Back Up?
No. At no point have I asked you to delete any of your backup. I said " Then in the old mint backup, access: Email Backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird//nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/Mail folder and copy the 'Local Folders' folder"
It is worrying that you did not understand this instruction.
re: Paragraph 1 there is only one Mail not -1529/MailMaill otherwise it is identical.
There is no problem with the Backup.
What we need to know is the directory of folders which your Thunderbird is currently using - not the backup. So far, you have said it was this:
Thunderbird 91.5. Help, More Trouble Shooting Information, Information Profile Directory Open /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release Select Mail Select Profiles Select Mint Thunderbird Select nt3r4mao.degault-202111105-1529 Select Mail Select Local Folders
The above information you provided implies you have this folder structure for your profile folders:
- /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/ nt3r4mao.degault-202111105-1529/Mail/Local Folders
IF the folder structure is as above then it is wrong and you have copied the wrong folders into the wrong location. So first we need to confirm the folder structure. Are we understanding what you have written - that needs to be sorted out first. You need to provide images showing that path directory Go to : /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail folder What is in that 'Mail' folder ? Is there a 'Profiles' folder in that 'Mail' folder ?
Provide an image showing this path directory: home/donald/.thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/ nt3r4mao.degault-202111105-1529/Mail/Local Folders
You're instructions to me were. After Exit Thunderbird.were. In the new .thunderbird/xqfvqvc.default-release/Mail folder-Delete the Profiles folder. Leave this open showing contents of Mail folder - this where you will paste the correct folder. Are you are telling me to delete the Profiles folder. And just the "Profiles folder".
I said delete all after /Email Mail back up/ Not Email Back up. Now you worry me.
I am signing of I am beat. Cleaned house all morning. I will try to get back tomorrow 3/25 or maybe 3/26. Tomorrow I do laundry. but I will get back. I know that all this makes since to you but it is all new to me and at times I have to re-read your instructions, Please give me time OK.
No worries - take your time.
If you can provide images as requested, so we can see the folder path of your current profile name folder and all the folders it contains, it will clarify some queries, so the forum then knows what you have rather than hoping we know.
Then I can use them to show you what to do.
In Thunderbird 91.5. Yesterday it was upgraded to 91.7. Just interesting doesn't change a thing.
Paragraph starting with Thunderbird 91.5 Help. It is just as you have displayed it. Note xqxfvqvc has 8 letters. The next Paragraph starts with /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqvc. You are now in Mint 20.3. I will now go to Mint and enter /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqvc.default-release/Mail/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4mao.default-2021111105-1529/Mail/Local Folders. Results were could not be found. But all of those entries could be found it I were to open Documents and then select each on of the enteries. They are all there.
/home/donald/Documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders The mail folder contains all of those emails that I wish to import.. And it starts with /home/donald/Documents and so on.
I hope I read your last correctly. And provided the information you needed My Laundry is done 2 loads with bedding. And I assembled a set of TV trays. I thought I would like to eat in the Living room and take advantage of of the Large screen TV. You have wonderful weekend.
re :go to Mint and enter /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqvc.default-release click on the 'Mail' folder Does it contain a folder called 'Profiles' ?
No it doesn't. Those files are contained in Documents Email.
/home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqvc.default-release
If I were to start with /home/Documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc and so on they will.
Exit Thunderbird - it must not be running
Access:
- /home/donald/Documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529 folder
- click on 'Mail' folder to see contents.
You will see a 'Local Folders' folder.
- Copy the 'Local Folders' folder - not it's contents - copy the 'Local Folders' folder itself.
Access:
- /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqvc.default-release folder
- click on 'Mail' folder to see contents.
- Delete the 'Local Folders' folder
- Paste in the copied 'Local Folders' folder - it replaces the one you deleted.
Start Thunderbird.
3/25/22 110:08 There is no Mail folder. The Mail folder is only visible when The Documents folder in Mint 20.3 folder is selected and next the Email Back up is selected, then Profiles is selected, next is Mint Thunderbird, Next is xqxfvqzc.default-2021111051529/ next select Mail, next select Local folders, and there we have all those Emails that I wish to import. Thunderbird is not running. Working on Sunday. Not a bad idea, tomorrow will be busy. But I will check my email. I appreciate your patience. I hope this helps.
Something is not correct. You say backup has: 'xqxfvqzc.default-2021111051529' and you say : /home/donald/.thunderbird has the 'xqxfvqvc.default-release' folder
I would not expect Thunderbird to create two profiles using identical names but one has the -release added. I would have expected different numbers/letters or both profiles would have identical names. I'm now wondering if you have another profile name folder.
So I need you to locate the profile from within Thunderbird to ensure you are opening the correct profile.
Start Thunderbird
Help > More TroubleShooting Information 'Profile Folder' - click on 'Open Directory' It will open a new window showing contents of current 'profile name' folder. and you say : "There is no 'Mail' folder." Is that correct?
If that 'Mail folder is missing then Try this:
Exit Thunderbird - it must not be running
Access:
- /home/donald/Documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529 folder
- COPY the 'Mail' folder
Access:
- /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqvc.default-release folder
- Paste in the copied 'Mail' folder - it replaces the one you deleted.
Start Thunderbird.
Okulungisiwe
When I go to home/donald/Documents/Email Back up/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders And Now we have all the Emails I want and Need.
Now to Thunderbird there are 2 Mail folders are contained there in. Help-More Trouble Shooting-Profile Directory-Open Directory- /home/donald.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release/Mail/Local Folders (shows all the Email folders that I have created
since I installed Mint Mate 20.2 now 20.3)
Now Back to Mail donot select Local folders select /Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders And now we have all those Emails that I wish .and hope to have again
Now to Thunderbird there are 2 Mail folders are contained there in. Help-More Trouble Shooting-Profile Directory-Open Directory- /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release/Mail/Local Folders (shows all the Email folders that I have created)
Previously you told me : /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release folder Did not contain a folder called 'Mail'.
So, I asked you to paste the 'Mail' folder from the backup into 'xqxfvqzc.default-release' folder I presume you have done this hence why you now see:
- /home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release/Mail/Local Folders
You say: it shows all the Email folders that I have created
If it has everything what is the problem?
What is this profile :
- /Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders
Do I presume it is another backup of an entirely different profile called nt3r4maO.default? Does it contain a completely different set of mail accounts (email addresses) and completely different folders and emails in the 'Local Folders'?
I wish you could post some images - do you have more than one 'profile name' folder : /home/donald/.thunderbird/ What is shown in the .thunderbird folder
If you posted images I could at least work out whether the 'Local Folders' in 'nt3r4maO.default' contained different folders to the ones in 'Local Folders' in 'xqxfvqzc.default-release'
The only time you see Mail is when you start with /home/documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc and so on. No Documents no mail.
Finish you're Para 2 (shows all the Emails that I have created since I installed Mint Mate 20.2 now 20.3). Now back to Mail donot select Local folders select /Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders And now we have all those Emails that I wish and hope to have again.
I didn't copy and paste the Local Folders as shown in home/Documents. This worries me. Once I copy it where do I place it. And then I delete the one that remains and then paste the one that was copied. I believe that when I delete the one not copied the one copied will be deleted. And all I am doing is replacing what I deleted. This worries me.
Let me work on on copying and pasting images. Please slow down. Relax.
Please do not get the Emails created before Mint Mate 20.2 and the ones created after the installation of Mint Mate 20.2.
Mr. Toad I hope this helps you All the folders that were created before Mint Mate 20.2 Mate Mint /home/donald/Documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders

/home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release/Mail/Local Folders This shows those Emails that were created after the installation of Mint Mate 20.2 now 20.3
/home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release/Mail/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4ma0.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders 1. This shows those Emails that were created before Mint Mate 20.2 now 20.3 Note this is the same that is also shown in Min Mate home/donald/Documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders 2. The difference is that the first one does not show Document/Email backup/Profiles. And yet shows those Emails that I want and need.
re :/home/donald/Documents/Email backup/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders
This is a backup folder and is not being used by Thunderbird. I'm not talking about that backup.
re :/home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release/Mail/Local Folders
This shows those Emails that were created after the installation of Mint Mate 20.2 now 20.3
Good - that sounds like all is ok.
But it sounds like you are trying to retrieve all the emails created before that installation. Those 'before' emails were stored in a different profile name folder called 'nt3r4ma0.default' and you are wanting to get them into the newer profile name folder called 'xqxfvqzc.default-release'.
re :/home/donald/.thunderbird/xqxfvqzc.default-release/Mail/Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4ma0.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders
Now Back up directory to 'Mail' (do not select Local folders) select /Profiles/Mint Thunderbird/nt3r4maO.default-20211105-1529/Mail/Local Folders
This is where those 'before' emails seem to be located. BUT as I have already said...you should not have a 'Profiles' folder in the 'Mail' folder. If you have the above then it is wrong. It means at some point in time you copy pasted a backup and put it into the wrong place.
We need to get your folder structure correct first then sort out the emails.
You are not going to delete that 'Profiles' folder - you need to 'Move' it.
You need to get that 'Profiles' - folder (I've shown it as bold) out of the 'Mail' folder and put it into :/home/donald/Documents folder so it part of the backup. We will use it later to get the correct files.
Tell me when you have done this.
But it sounds like you are trying to retrieve all the emails created before that installation. Those 'before' emails were stored in a different profile name folder called 'nt3r4ma0.default' and you are wanting to get them into the newer profile name folder called 'xqxfvqzc.default-release'.
Yes.
This is where those 'before' emails seem to be located. BUT as I have already said...you should not have a 'Profiles' folder in the 'Mail' folder. If you have the above then it is wrong. It means at some point in time you copy pasted a backup and put it into the wrong place. Those just appeared. I had nothing to do with the Profiles being located in the Mail folder...
You need to get that 'Profiles' - folder (I've shown it as bold) out of the 'Mail' folder and put it into :/home/donald/Documents folder so it part of the backup. We will use it later to get the correct files.
- /home/donald/Documents tells me you are talking about Mint Mate20.3, desk top. It is already there.
