Firefox v 91.0 update AGAIN reverted bookmarks to double-spaced but prev. solution DOES NOT WORK
With Firefox 91.0 update, the DREADED double-spacing of bookmarks is back--despite the volumes of complaints when it occurred with previous update(s). At least then, the fix to toggle off the "proton.contextmenus" code worked (as shown below)** NOW IT DOES NOT. With 50 million once dedicated users abandoning FIREFOX, why is this happening? How do we fix it NOW? (and no, I have no intention of becoming a secondary programmer every two weeks to fix these upgrades--nor I think will many others) Firefox Support, where are you?

For testing purposes, the developers left a preference in Firefox 89 to switch between new style and old style menus:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.
(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the preference to switch between true (new style) and false (old style)

The configuration preference that you have been using was only in place for testing purposes and has been removed.
There is no way that I am aware of to make the changes you seek, but this may be something that we revisit in a future update.
Then how DO I return the bookmarks to single-spacing?

You cannot in the current version of Firefox (that I am aware of), but this may be looked at again in a future update.
Why on earth have you imposed this change on your users? What is the point in forcing my bookmarks to run off the bottom of the screen? As a Firefox supporter for many years (and generous financial supporter too, gladly given) I am sorry to say goodbye, I'm off to Chrome because I've had enough of this (to me) pointless fiddling with a great product. Thank you for all those years of service.
Well foxyjm I'm sure you won't be the only one leaving FF. In fact I'll give FF to the end of the month, then I'll be joining the many leaving FF for another browser.
In Firefox 91+ you can no longer disable Proton and revert changes that come with this design via "browser.proton.enabled = false" on the about:config page. Best in Firefox 91 is to set browser.proton.enabled at its default value true as the false setting can cause issues with checkboxes.
In Firefox 91+ you need to use code in userChrome.css to override changes coming with the Proton design.
WARNING: This script is not provided by Mozilla and is not officially supported Creating a userChrome.css file and other ways of customizing Firefox that are not exposed in the interface are there for developers, not end-users. If it were intended for end-users, you would see a menu option or checkbox; you wouldn't have to hack a text file in a hidden location.
What this means is that even though the functionality you want is no longer supported, a third-party has found a way to do it using the CSS file. If it breaks in new versions, you will need to contact the person who provided the script.
Mozilla seems to be at cross purposes with most of its users. As a former Firefox user, could I say that all I want is a means of browsing the internet without the need to restore my original layout after so many updates. I'm a simple non-techie and I do NOT want to become a programmer even if I knew how. When Mozilla told me via this forum to take the Proton double-spaced bookmarks or leave them ... I left them.
That was almost four weeks ago and I haven't regretted my move one bit, except to lose an old friend of many years' browsing. I'm responding to this forum email notifications in the vain hope that someone might hear my plea and that of many others, but most I fear will vote with their feet, or should it be fingers?
Hi foxyjm, I noticed that you said "Mozilla told me via this forum". This is a community support forum. The people that answer questions here are users just like you, volunteering their time. Do you have a link to the thread you're referring to?
No I don't. 'Mozilla told me' in the sense that all my info came from this forum. There have been a few questions regarding the double space bookmarks, first a fix using config:sys, then it ceased to work, then came quite a few posts regarding a CSS file, whatever that is, finally posts stating that this no longer worked either. It was stated that the return to single spacing may be considered in a future update.
I do appreciate that many people give generously of their time on this and other forums, and I apologise if any aspersion upon them was inferred from my post. However there's an old saying that too many cooks spoil the broth and while many people may enjoy fiddling with their browser to restore their existing layouts after constant changes many others, including myself, prefer browsing to fiddling and reluctantly decide to move from Firefox. Mozilla seems impervious to their requests.
Again my thanks for years of service and best wishes to all you volunteers out there.
