This is annoying behaviour already reported here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1312711 (archived).

Lets say I have 100 tabs. I would expect Firefox to jump on 99th tab when I close the 100th tab. Most of the time Firefox jumps on the very first one. When I say most of time I mean it is not event consitent, sometime I get 99th.
