Hello Everybody,

I am running Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 on my windows 7 laptop and want to upgrade to the 78.12.0 version of Thunderbird. Can you kindly advice me how should I do it? I have backup of my profile using Mozbackup tool (version 1.5.1).

With my regards,

Goutam

just my opinion, but I suggest if you have a 64 bit operating system that you actually simply parallel install the 64 bit version and after it has installed and created a new profile. Replace the profile data with that from your old profile which Thunderbird is not running. If it works out you will be able to run both your old version (2) and the new version as they live in different program folders on windows

To be honest, smply open the windows file manger and type %appdata%\Thunderbird into the address line to replace the currently showing path and hit enter. Copy the Thunderbird folder and it's contents and sub folders to a usb drive and dispense with mozbackup. It has been unsupported since 2012 and I am sure reliability is becoming an issue.

Profiles are in a sub folder of Thunderbird.

Note with versions after 2 there is an option for troubleshooting on the help menu which contains a button to open the file manager in the profile folder. So all you have to know is where your old data is. The new version can tell you where it is keeping data.

just go for it. While it has been discussed I don't think any of the code to perform profile updates for things over the versions has actually been removed. The only thing is you might want to write down your passwords as they are perhaps the most vulnerable as that storage system has had a number of iterations where store file names have changed. since V2, but even they "should" be alright.

Having a recent profile backup would also be prudent as would removing all addons as none of them will be compatible post update

Dear Matt,

Thank you so much for responding. I have taken a profile backup with mozbackup-1.5.1 and hope this will work with Thunderbird-78.12.0.

Now what? Should I first uninstall the old version of Thunderbird and then star the installation of the new one? Or should I directly start the new version installation. I am asking so many questions as I am not conversant with this. Please don't mind!

With regards,

Goutam

Dear Matt,

Thanks a lot. I have installed the latest version and have copied the files from the profile as advised by you. Everything is working fine. I have also configured the 2-stage authentication for my gmail account.

Only one point to be noted. Though I tried to install the new version at a different folder, the installer created a separate at the old location and put the files under the new profile.

Thanks again.

with regards,

Goutam

my point is that V2 should still run, with your old profile. the applications go in different places. the profiles will always be stored as sub folders under the windows environment variable %appdata%

Note that oAuth is the better authentication for Gmail. It is their preferred method. Application passwords are not a good idea as ther periodically appear to fail based on forum posts. Getting an SMS everytime you want to log in is just mind destroying. oAuth uses cookies... so make sure they have not been disabled.
