Firefox version 89

more options

I have been a loyal Firefox user for umpteen years – but no more! Without asking, my browser updated to version 89, and immediately, I didn’t like it. It looked washed out, difficult to tell the difference between tabs (I routinely have 30+ tabs open at once), plus it was slower. The biggest “peeve” was when I tried to enter a Google search question in the “Search” box, but Firefox kept jumping up the URL bar. Gawd I hate that! That did it! I decided to revert back to version 88 but you decided you would “punish” me for my decision. I lost all my bookmarks, passwords and preferences. I am a computer support volunteer and I work primarily with senior citizens, however I try to help anyone who needs my help. When I setup a new computer for a client, I usually install Firefox and Chrome, explaining that many people do not like the default browser that comes with Windows. From this point on, I will no longer recommend nor install Firefox. You lost a customer today. Congratulations.

I was really angry that there seems to be no way to actually send an email "TO" Mozilla. Instead, they depend on you volunteers to take the heat for them. If you know of anyway to actually get this information to them, I would appreciate it.

dbben,

You, sir, are a steely-eyed missile man! (which is quite a compliment, if you understand the reference). I had assumed that since I didn't name my profiles, that each "default" would simply over-write the previous one. I found 3 different versions and one of them had a bookmarkbackup file dated this morning. I was able to recover all my lost data, bookmarks and passwords.

Thank you sir, let's end this one on a happy note. I don't think even you are good enough to fix all the problems that I am (and apparently many others are) having with the new FF version, but you have not only done what I needed to get me up and running again, you have done far more than expected. That being said, you have definitely restored my faith is what tech support is supposed to be.

thanks, -Phil

Hi,

The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers. If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.

If you need to file a bug report or feature request for Firefox and other Mozilla products, see File a bug report or feature request for Mozilla products for details.

Well, that was less than helpful. I tried using your link to "submit feedback" and after going through all the crap of setting up an account and profile, it led me to nowhere. There is a section where I can look at stuff, but I can find no place to enter my own. I normally say "thanks for trying", but I think you, me and Mozilla all know that you are most likely a bot and you have no intention of helping me. Bye.

Dearest "dbben" (with all sorts of useless, unnecessary characters),

You have proved my point about just how bad tech support has come. You said, "thank you for being a super loyal FF user". If you had truly read my post you would have seen that I said, "I have been a loyal ... but no more!" You also said, that if I, "...would like to re-install ver 88", to let you know. Again, if you had actually read what i wrote, you would see that I DID reinstall version 88 and that is when "I was punished" for my decision, losing all my bookmarks and passwords. I am curious, have you actually helped anyone? Or do you just parrot useless information without actually understanding the problem?

Oh, i read your post carefully. And just because your are upset doesnt mean you do not deserve some help.

And yes, i do help people whenever possible not only here on this forum but also in real life in my community.

What i have been trying to explain to all the young brainiacs at Mozilla is that people are upset and have issues with the new version. And it is no reason to consider the anger as offensive.

Instead look at with how passionate and loyal the FIreFox consumer has been. Take a close look at their statement when they say, "Why did you screw up MY FIREFOX?". It was my FireFox and was extremely happy with this browser and none others.

I think I was successful at teaching the kids my old fashion values, which is to provide "quality" when helping people instead of it being about "quantity"

In any case, i did miss that you had installed ver 88.

What you might want to try is to see if the WIndows 10 Edge browser has been covertly copying your FF user data into it. So open it up and see if the Edge has a copy of your FF data. If so, then execute an import from FF and select the edge browser from the list.

Let me know if this worked out for you.  :-)

dbben,

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. You are correct, "Edge" did retain my bookmarks -- at least most of them, the more recent ones are gone, but I may be able to recall those from memory (mine, not RAM). You seem to have heard these complaints before, perhaps many times before. Interestingly, I installed version 88 and imported an older bookmarks file (html), but since it was several months old, it too was woefully out of date -- still better than nothing. However, when I restarted Firefox, it updated to 89 AGAIN, and AGAIN I lost everything.

I will try to work with Edge and/or Chrome to see if one of them will work for me. As far as Firefox, I feel like I am going through an ugly divorce. Sometimes hard choices must be made.

You sound like you might be a kindred spirit. When you said, "Teaching the kids my old fashion values", makes me wonder how long you have been working with computers. I myself go back to the days of the IBM 360 in the mid-70's (about 47 years ago). As I said in my first rant -- uh, post -- I am a computer support volunteer and work primarily with other senior citizens, but often find myself helping kids young enough to be my grand-children.

Your suggestions were, indeed helpful. I also hope that you are (somewhat) successful in educating the "kids" at Mozilla.

Later, -Phil,

I'm glad you found some of your bookmarks. I have a feeling that there may be more available for you, perhaps stashed in another profile. You see, most times when a new version of FF is installed, a new virgin profile is as well. But the prior profile could still be on the disk.

If you want to try an additional methodology, lets see if you can re-load some of your older profiles that are hopefully still on your system.

open fire fox.

then in the url field type and then go to: about:profiles

this is a profile management screen and there should be profiles listed on it, inclduing the current profile that is active on your FF at this time. It is labled "default".

so in addition to the default / in use profile, i hope you see other profiles listed on tht sceen too.

if so, launch each one at a time and see if any of them is actually your former profile with all your bookmarks in it.

If you do hit the jack pot in this regard, then step number one is to have edge to import it.

Afterwards, we can work towards getting your old FF back.

ps: yes, i believe you and i are from the same era !  :-)

I would like to add my complaints to your [growing] list of disgruntled users.  I have been using Firefox for many, many years.  Your release of version 89.0 seemed to go back in time.   Several times in the not-too-distant past you have moved the tab buttons from the top to other areas of the screen.   I do not like them the way you have done it this time.  In the past, I have been able to move them back under the Bookmarks bar, above the main window, at the TOP of the screen.  This time, it would seem that the fix from the past no longer works.  Not only that, but the few instructions involving changing them back that I have found on the help inquiries, by adding (or modifying?) a .css file, seem inordinately confusing. Why does the tab location information keep changing periodically?  Why can't your installation of a new update retain users changes? What's wrong with the current tab buttons?  Sometimes they all show up, other times there is only one visible for the current window.  Have to use CTRL-TAB (or CTRL-BACKSPACE-TAB) to maneuver between the windows.  And, if I hit CTRL-F (for 'find'), all the tabs become visible and HIDE the search box.  Whoever thought this version was an improvement should be fired!  Oh, yeah...  they're all volunteers. Anyway, that's my rant. Hope this gets repaired soon.

dbben you seem to be willing to help, so I will try asking you questions. the other responses I've gotten all involve css fixes, which I'm not comfortable using and in any case, should be a part of Customize in the browser.

In any case, Seburo is woefully out of date. Going to Help in FF to Submit Feedback has been unavailable since last week. I'd guess that it crashed under the response to the ham-fisted, forced update to version 89. Also, the suggestion to "this link" leads to a Mozilla Ideas link, requiring an additional sign-on which I am not going to use.

You began describing how to look in about:profiles for copies of lost bookmarks, or to check on Edge for a copy. A step-by-step list would be exceedingly useful for the many users who are not tech-savvy, like me. Like how to import into FF.

I, also, innocently accepted the download to the awful version 89 on my upstairs PC. This one downstairs will remain on 88 as long as possible. On the upstairs PC, after reading the horrendous warnings about re-installing version 88, I removed FF completely and downloaded 88. Fine. Came back a few hours later only to find that FF had updated ITSELF to the awful new version.

Currently, I have the proton stuff shut off upstairs. I know that's a temporary fix.

Version 89 - well. The text is too small. The bookmarks toolbar had tiny print with huge vertical spaces around each bookmark - it would have taken three full screens to show them all. This DECREASED readability.

The info on the "three bars" menu has all been shuffled around. Also, it looks like some functionality has been removed. And I like my tabs squared off and on a dark background.

Let the tech geeks play around with CSS changes. Leave options in the Customize section for those of us who barely remember Intro to BASIC. I was so happy when I found FF and stopped using Internet Explorer (ages ago) - it was beautiful, fast, and it WORKED. Now the Remove Pop-ups function is broken. I don't like Edge, I detest Chrome, and now my FF has been destroyed.

Can you somehow get a message to Mozilla that our beautiful and beloved Firefox has been destroyed by this hideously ugly update? Please.
