Create new profile or refresh?

This happens far too often, in the course of 9 months or more frequently. What is going on Firefox? v88.0.1 Windows 10

Constant script errors that freeze whatever program I am in, regardless of the option I choose - the popup no longer gives me a WAIT or STOP IT. The box comes up that says DON'T ask me about this again.

I do not want to copy passwords, more than anything, should I create a new profile. I do not want to deal with replacing or losing the file. When I attempted to load two other profiles over the last two days, both times FF crashed. I gave up.

I am NOW in Safe Mode and without errors, and it's hard to know which app is causing the problem.

Is there a new addon that will back up Firefox these days?

Suggestions? Seriously, FF seems to be a whole lot more trouble these days than she is worth.

Thank you.

Use these links to create a new profile. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Yes, still have issues. Not sure what you mean AS IS. Just do it???

Disabled ABP, but annoying issues persist.

You didn't address logins, among other concerns. Not an issue?

Thank you.

If you use the new profile without making any changes, (settings, add-ons . . .) this will tell us something.

Are you worried about losing them?

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

I lost passwords once. I could not recover pw, bookmarks, and do not remember the rest. Tried moving from old to new profile and NONE were transferred.

I now have it saved in a spreadsheet, but the last time I tried to export (or import) a file, I couldn't do it.

How long do you want me to test it before I go nuts without re-adding adblocker and logins, specifically?

Thank you.

hello ciao,

if you are experiencing crashed, then FireFox may not be the problem but the symptom.

My first suggestion is for you to preserve your firefox user data. This way if your FF becomes a disaster then you will still have your user data saved for future use and restore.

Close your FF at this time. Now open the MSEdge browser. And execute/invoke/initiate a full import from FireFox. Next look around inside the Edge browser to ensure there is continuity of the user data from FireFox.

Afterwards, lets take a look at your FireFox system.

Can you tell us how much Ram Memory your computer has? And what is the amount of virtual memory/page file in windows too?

Hey, -dbben, (etc.),

The crashes were only when I tried opening my other profiles. The crashes were on those profiles.

Never wanted to use any MS browsers, particularly Edge... ...to ensure there is continuity of the user data from FireFox. Do you mean test the browser? Do NOT want to share with this. Alternative solution?

RAM 4GB. virtual memory/page file - 3499. Looks close to me.

Are you onto something here?

Scripts can sometimes be interpreted as malware. So script errors can be caused by anti-malware blocking them.

And yes, people dont like the Edge. While i dont ask people to use it for browser, it acts like a high caliber back up tool for FireFox. So in this regard, i suggest people to conveniently use Edge only for backing up and restoring FF user data. If FF ever needs to be reinstalled, then all its user data can be imported from Edge.

In regards to your user profiles.

I am not sure why they have become problematic for you. But i do understand that once in a while the profile becomes corrupted.

While the amount of ram is kind of on the low end and the amount of page file is kind of on the high end and should be around 2500. But i dont think they would cause your profiles to crash. But indeed, you are wise to know the value with creating a new profile to stablize your FireFox.

There is a profile diagnostics app by FireFox. But I dont think this is needed to use at this time because we still have some fundamental steps we can take here.

For example, you already know the value of a clean profile. So lets take this "clean" methodology a few steps further by launching your windows in a clean mode.

Open the Win10 Task Manager, go to StartUp tab, disable (temporarily) everything that is enabled. Then reboot and test run your FF. If possible also run FF in safemode too while windows is in clean mode.

If your FF behaves, then you have eliminated the problem.

I just want to be clear that I have not yet created a new profile. Right?

Unchecked everything. Resetting page file. Since I must restart the computer, let us hope that the MS updates do not do any damage...

I hope I am doing this correctly. Not transferring anything to Edge, yet. Thank you for the suggestion to use it for backup.

Keep you posted as determined.

Thank you.

I disabled all programs in startup. I lowered the page file to 2500 (I think it defaulted to 2000). I restarted laptop, and because I delayed and delayed, it installed the current MS updates. Never went into Safe Mode.

Laptop is very speedy and working extremely well. Have not had any issues.

I have had a rash of script errors over the past 1-2 years. After fighting it, I began switching my profile. Most of the time they had been saying *an Adblock Plus script...* but on this go round, they have been widely varied, including outlook (.com, not Office) errors. That freezes the emails, no matter if I let script run or stop it - so conducting any work has to wait until another day.

When you get a chance, please explain what you conclude from your troubleshooting.

I will enable startup programs and I will, ASAP, backup FF to Edge.

Nice job, dbben. Very nice job! Thank you.

What is/are the exact error message(s) ?

hello caio, we are glad you found some of our suggestions beneficial. But there may need more work to do.

at this time, i am assuming you are trying to re-enable some of the apps that you disabled as part of this methodology to see if your FireFox is the cause of your problem or a symptom of a problem.

so where do we stand at this time?

btw: do you have a url to share with us that contains this script error message? As Fred is inquiring, do you have an image to share with us?

more options

I actually forgot to re-enable the programs I disabled on startup. Outlook is acting a little weirdly - I could not delete emails, but I just reloaded it. Just opened my computer for the first time today.

Still have script errors, although not nearly as often as before. Not even close in frequency. I am enclosing one image from last year, which is the same one I still get on a particular website, other than outlook.com. I get errors on Facebook.

This website (w/image) requires a login, so I am not going to give the URL to you. The one I get in outlook is my personal email account. I get errors in Weather Underground but not at the moment: https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/ca/west-hollywood

Will take screenshots as the errors appear. I am sure I have other examples in Trash.

Thank you.

Thanks for the additional information.

Incidentally, microsoft installed 21h1 update for windows this month. It has a performance checker for win 10.

If you go to the updates section and look in updates history, you should see a line item for the 21h1 update.

Then if you click "more information", it should take you to microsofts performance checker and tell you what is not good for win10.

ps: it seems that "fonts" may be the cause of your pain and sufferring with scripts. I've seen this issue in the past but allowed my fellow experts to provide the "exact" advice regarding these "fonts" problems. So i will standby and see if anyone knows exactly how to correct this issue for you.  :-)

I have 20H2 installed. The updates yesterday were a servicing stack and security updates. Will look for the feature. Interesting - I paused updates, although - um, yesterday - so I am checking for the newer version. No - they all say 20H2.

Where exactly can you click for more info?

Getting an answer/s to the specific error/s would be amazing. I contacted Adblock Plus last year and again this year, as well as the forum, but nobody ever responded to script errors.

Thank you. You are welcome for the image.

Thanks for the information.

Actually, i believe that update 21h1 is directly tied to the new performance checker of Win 10. Even though i am a computer guro, per se, i was pleasantly surprised with 1 or 2 changes i made that improved my performance on this end.

My suggestion is to research MS update 21h1 and get it installed as it has fixes. Then once installed, invoke the performance checker via Whats New.

I've attached a pic from my system. Hopefully you can make yours match to it.

You are welcome.

Do not know why I don't have that version. Should I uninstall 20H2? You did not say so, so I assume to just install on top of it. Why the difference?

Thank you.

This may be one of the inflictions your o.s. is experiencing, ie the lack of updates.

When it comes to windows update for Win10, i believe we have no control over it.

However, i do know from first hand experience that some updates 100% refuse to install although Microsoft is pushing them down onto our Win10 systems.

So my suggestion is to go the experts on updates for the o.s. at / on Microsofts Discussion Forum for Windows Update and see what methodologies they can recommend that will help your unique win10 o.s. to be up to date.

As a former Microsoft Windows Top Contributor, I know there are all kinds of tricks in Microsoft to see what has been updated or now and why. But I found it easier with keeping up with the kardashians than keeping up with Microsoft Windows.  :-)
