Thunderbird 78.10.2 fails to open

more options

Newly installed W10 and Tbird 78.10.2 on my laptop using saved profile from my desktop PC (W7; Tbird 78.10.1 - no problems there). Opening Tbird on the laptop the first time works fine - everything as expected, seems to have everything in the right place etc.. Then closed Tbird and reopened it - the BIG problem starts!

It reopens with this wee grey window 9see attached image) and nothing I've tried from suggestions garnered from around WWW has helped.

This now happens every time Itry to open T'bird.

Your skilfull assistance in solving this will be GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks

jb

Jumped through all the hoops suggested - Safe Mode and so on - and it all seems to be OK now! Yippee! Very many thanks for your suggestions - but I don't know what it was which put everything right again. I'm running with all four extensions enabled and it all seems OK.

Does it appear in safe mode (hold Shift when launching TB)? It looks like you have an incompatible add-on, one for removing duplicate contacts or messages.

Safe mode works! But then opening T'bird "regular" after that fails with the same problem. I removed all four extensions but it still failed with same problem.

I noticed that the parent.lock file wasn't removed after closing T'bird so I deleted it (I read somewhere that when T'bird is closed that file is removed and recreated upon reopening). Didn't make any difference but at least when I tried to reopen T'bird "regular" again (and failed) that file reappeared as it should. Suggests that some part of the opening procedure is working perhaps?

If you read the other topic with the same problem, it's suggested to try the other factors that are applied in safe mode, such as hardware acceleration and broken layout. But even if the toolbars and controls are reset, and acceleration disabled, the problem may remain in normal mode. In that case , creating a new profile might be the only solution.

Also tried unchecking "hardware acceleration" in Options/General (another tip picked up along the way). Didn't make any difference.
