Two days back Thunderbird became unable to download or send messages. I have verified that the server settings are correct, and they have not changed. I have also been unable to add to my Gmail, as it cannot connect to the server.

I think it must be either a corruption somewhere in the Thunderbird settings or possibly a firewall problem.

Is it possible to delete and restore the profile settings or try to find out where the problem might originate?

I would be very grateful for any help or suggestions anyone might have.

Isisombululo esikhethiwe

Exit Thunderbird Access Firewall, Thunderbird must be an allowed program. But it is possibe the Firewall has got confused after an update and thinks this update is a different program. If it is already set as allowed, then select to 'block' , 'Apply' and ok it. then access Firewall again and set Thunderbird as 'Allow', 'Apply' ,and ok it. Then restart Thunderbird.

Many thanks for your reply.

It is very plausible the problem stems from the Firewall, but unfortunately this is managed by my workplace administrator and I am unable to access this.

An update on the account problems:

I deleted my original work email account and tried to reenter the details that are supposed to be the correct settings manually. This did not work.

It did, however, work when I tried to detect settings automatically, and installed the third party app Owl, which I understand is a way to allow Thunderbird to work with Exchange servers. I have limited understanding of how Owl works, but I think the problem with this account is likely due to changes on the server.

I am still unable to add my gmail using the default settings - I get an error message about the password. However, I have verified that the password is correct as I can log in on a browser. I would be grateful for any help on how to add a gmail account.

Another update - I am now able to add the gmail account too, but it is opening the gmail login in a different window, so I am guessing it must be relying on Owl.

re :but it is opening the gmail login in a different window, Yes. that is correct. It opens a new window specifically to logon to gmail, so gmail is verifying that you really are you and gmail then allow Thunderbird access.
