RAM usage increases as time passes.
I have noticed that if I leave an empty firefox tab open after sometime the empty tab somehow would start using a large amount of RAM. I don't know if it is expected behaviour or not. I came to know about this problem as I use a laptop and I very rarely put it to sleep, so my laptop would idle out on charging with a empty firefox tab open and it would start out with consuming reasonable amount of RAM but after I return mabye after 20 minutes and the RAM usage would skyrocket to about a gig for only firefox with that empty tab. I do have 4 add-ons installed but firefox behaves the same when I restart it in safe mode. Any help is very much appreciated.

the current FF does consume ram, lots of it; unfortunately
i dont know why it consumes more idling
but it has more features than before
my suggestion is to close it while not in use

Could you please suggest a firefox version which is less RAM intensive so I can downgrade to that version.
unfortunately, i have no idea.
maybe netscape? :-)
Hello! It has been a while, but just in case you are still interested. I suggest you try the firemin program. It is free (GNU licence). And it drastically reduced the RAM usage for me, few tens of MB instead of 700 MB with default settings and the firefox is still useable... Best whishes, Oskars
