Action pages of emails do not display (FF 86, 87 - March 2021)

more options

EMAIL DISPLAY IN GMAIL: Hello. All of my emails open the first page okay, but an increasing number of action pages in emails do not open. Those pages contain forms to fill out, petitions to sign, and donations to make. This problem began in late February/early March (FF 86&87).

The tech support at EveryAction.com said she thought they need Javascript to open, but I couldn't find any setting or add-on in FF to enable/disable Javascript. I don't know why all of their action pages have been opening fine for years--maybe it's related to FF's new versions. I tried adding Policy Control because it supposedly enables/disables Javascript but it didn't solve my problem.

The tech support at Earth Justice wrote this in response to my report about their action pages not displaying: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:87.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/87.0; https://earthjustice.org/action/investigate-troubling-payments-that-threaten-the-florida-panther?contactdata=8D8RgJTCUXwiDCjeWPHh7wQ1fwDy7YSqjRoUFBMLj9iH2tXUofJiQ1CKU%2fIhkHfdjY8KsFkiYme4BhD4yp%2bpJ9S13ALo6NdUs4CtwLA2KaAhIZ0GP2%2bWq9ZUYNwtkHNEKC%2bxUF4VNRJ1XirXG00WayYuwLGnnHVzRWtCwf3s%2fqtR64TlcMwKx0w2e3AyPLspJ8xDw1TQNs%2fSBpWztf%2fNBkvDKFTrC6fsKAvY54zt13IfVVPcfU%2byEdneTMzDaYIN&ms=email&utm_source=crm&utm_medium=email&utm_term=action&utm_campaign=2102_Action_Panthers_Haaland&%3butm_content=HTMLTakeActionButton1&emci=5a0f473e-c881-eb11-85aa-00155d43c992&emdi=01870d6d-d68b-eb11-85aa-00155d43c992&ceid=962627 "We are still investigating this problem, but it appears to be concentrated among Firefox users. Hi Bo, I see a few icons from blockers, so perhaps we should check those in case the site got on a block list.

(A) The shield icon toward the left end of the address bar usually turns a bit purplish when the built-in Tracking Protection feature is blocking content.

Click the shield icon to learn more or make an exception. See: Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for desktop.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix may block content in pages.

These extensions usually provide a toolbar button to manage (unblock) blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you sometimes need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Is the problem caused by any of those?

Hi Bo, if I understand correctly, this problem is not with content missing from the email message itself. The problem is when you click a link in the email, it either does nothing (click ignored) or it starts to load a page but you hit a dead end instead of reaching the expected page. Is it one of those?

Is there an error message displayed in the content area instead of the page, or a popup error message?

Hi jscher2000. Thanks for responding. The main page of the email presents no problems in opening or in missing content--it's only after I click a link to take an action. The action link loads only the header of the group that sent the email, but the rest of the page is a white blank. No error messages or popups. I'm attaching several screen grabs showing blank action pages.

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

These extensions in the troubleshooting information list might be worth to look at. (Policy Control is currently disabled)

Hello cor-el and jscher2000. I'm relieved and happy to report the resolution of this problem. I disabled my Firefox extensions one by one and quickly found that Ghostery was the culprit in preventing action pages from displaying. I then trained Ghostery to trust the sites it was blocking, and all is well again. Apparently Javascript was not relevant. I may never know why Ghostery's blocking of email action pages started about five weeks ago when I'd been receiving such emails for years. I wish I had posted on Mozilla Support Community weeks ago. Thanks for the work you do. --Namaste, Bo.
