How to remove all UNPINNED Top Sites at one time?

This question has been around for years... Isn't anyone else annoyed by having to clean up UNPINNED Top Sites one at a time? I posted over four months ago about trying to find out where Top Sites stores those unpinned sites... no one seems to know, except to say they are placed there by Firefox internally. I presume that means it is hidden in the code somewhere. Someone on the development team must know where? Maybe if there was a poll of users about this annoyance?? I wish I was younger to be able to get back into coding... my old brain just isn't up to it... ________________________________________________________________ You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make 'em think...

There is no way to remove all NOT pinned tiles present under Top Sites because empty tiles are automatically filled from the history. If you do not want websites to appear there then you can pin websites to all tiles and reduce the number of rows. Note that a list of websites you dismiss is stored in a pref named browser.newtabpage.blocked on the about:config page, so the value of this pref can grow quite large if you dismiss a lot of pages.

(oops, edited to add NOT "all NOT pinned tiles" )

So I went to about:config, browser.newtabpage.blocked, selected Edit, it showed part of the huge string data that was in that pref, and pressed delete. Now browser.newtabpage.blocked shows empty, as a boolean. I changed it to False. Well, changing that to False took away Top Sites altogether! Did I do it right? and will all those UNPINNED tiles reappear? not right, and tiles are full again and I didn't even browse anywhere! The only way this issue will be resolved is code mod. Well, I am familiar with C++ and Java. I am looking at An Introduction To Hacking Mozilla. At 72 I am going to try and plow through this... maybe fresh eyes are what is needed? And, what is browser.newtabpage.enhanced for?

If you clear browser.newtabpage.blocked then all the sites that you blocked in the past via 'Dismiss' can possibly reappear. If you do not need to preserve the history for a specific tile then you can click "Delete from History". Unlike Dismiss this doesn't add a website to browser.newtabpage.blocked, but the tile with this item can reappear if you revisit the webpage and thus create new history.

Sorry... that is really not helpful. It still involves going through UNPINNED tiles one at a time... Please, if others find this a real pain/annoyance, chime in!

Top Sites is intentionally linked to your History. If you want a new tab page that shows your bookmarks or your own list of shortcuts, you could consider using some kind of "speed dial" add-on for that.

'Top Sites is intentionally linked to your History.' In other words the developers/coders could make a change to an annoying issue if they wanted to. As for 'using some kind of "speed dial" add-on'... I've looked at those add-on's and all have some major issues... besides add-on's and other 'third party' work-around's have issues. Why not fix the problem at the source? People will put up with the issues, only until something better comes around... it's only a matter of time before someone else fills the void.

Like I wrote above, you can pin sites to all tiles if you do not want them to show links added from the history.

I have pinned sites that I go to on a regular basis... i.e., AT&T Login, my Medical Portals, etc. and they do come back on any unpinned tiles on Top Sites. I just spent 20 minutes going through the three clicks needed to do the delete history... at&t needed over 60 clicks to finally get it off a unpinned tile even though I open that site through a pinned tile. I have this address pinned and even though I have it pinned, it shows up on a blank tile! It looks like all I will get is apologists for a bug the Moz://a is not going to, or can't, fix. I still hope other users will make their feelings known... In the mean time I will be looking for other alternative browsers... even if I have to pay for one... that will be less frustrating and more user friendly AND responsive to the user... Firefox came out as a Friendly Browser... it now seems to have joined the Microsoft and Apple business plan... No need to respond... I know when I'm pounding sand... beating a dead horse... p.s., look a some of the closed threads/achieved questions about this issue... they do go back years...
