Firefox keeps 'forgetting' login details for the websites I frequently visit. I also have difficulties with help articles tha bear no resmblance to the details i find on my browser

I find that my current version of Firefox browser (84.0.2 (64 bit)) seldom saves login details for websites that I regularly visit, despite my clicking the 'save' or ' update' buttons on the dialog box that appears when I log in manually. For example, I must have entered half a dozen or more details manually in the last and clicked the 'save' button on the dialog box tha appears but the 'login and password' menu item only shows two that have been saved that day.

I can find nothing that has had any effect in the present help topics.

Another annoying aspect is that help topics appear to prescribe 'fixes' that have no parallel in the details that appear on the actual browser menu items.

I apologise in advance to the relevant developers, but I am now questioning why I should persevere with such a 'buggy' app that used to perform beautifully in the past.

Are you using a password add-on/program?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Thank you Fred McD. If you mean have all my saved logins reappeared, the answer is that the problem is still there. If you mean that I have to build the list of saved logins all over again, then it is too early to tell; I need to try logging in and saving details all over again and then see if Firefox remembers them for more than a day or two. BTW, do I have to start Firefox in safe mode every time to perform this process?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes), any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem. If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.

Sorry, FredMcD, I am confused. I read the article you referenced but am none the wiser really. I infer from your statement that I must reconstruct all my log-ins with Firefox in safe mode and if Firefox 'forgets' them in ordinary mode it is a problem with one or other add-on. However, you provide no clues as to which add-on may be responsible. Perhaps you could help by explaining to me how I ascertain which add-ons I have because I have no idea what they may be after many years of using Firefox and it various updates. What I can tell you at the moment is that I'm finding that Firefox is not retaining my logiin details and it no longer appears to recognise me when I open it for the first time in any session; I have to login all over again and find that only the logins I agreed to save in the current session are remembered. All details from previous sessions are lost. Is it possible to rectify this phenomenon? If so, I would appreciate instructions. Regards

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or it could be Hardware Acceleration. How to disable Hardware Acceleration {web link}

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All Of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.
