The color picker when composing email doesn't work

I am using Thunderbird 78.4.3 (64-bit) under MacOSX 10.15.7. When I compose an email, I can select some text if I want to change the color, then I go either to the "Choose color for text" icon, or via the menu Format->"Text color...". In both cases, I have a set of controls, among which the part shown in the first attachment: if I click on the black color, I am presented with a selection of colors, and if I pick one, the second attachment shows the result: the HTML color string is unchanged, and when I press "OK", the text color is unchanged. I need to manually insert the HTML color code (i.e.: "#FF00FF") to get the changed color.

Is it possible to fix it?

Thank you and keep up the good work!

Nicola
