The browser crashes about every two or three days. I have enabled all four boxes in preferences (Priv & Sec settings) but the crash reporter does not appear. Is there anywhere in the Fedora Linux system where I can get some info about why this keep happening?

Hi Fred & cor-el,

I have not had any problem with Firefox for 10 days now. Through software updates from Fedora I am now using version 83.0 Sorry I could not produce data to explain the problem but I think it best to close it as 'solved' Thanks, Stuart

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 Submitted crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

Hello Fred,

Thanks for your response. I have done as you requested 'about:crashes'

The report shows 2 unsubmitted crash reports - the latest date is 23th July 2020 The report shows many submitted crash reports - the latest date 24th July 2020

                                                                                  - the earliest date is 29th Jan 2020

I assume that none of the recent crashes are shown on this display. Can you suggest any further investigation I can do?

Regards, Stuart Marshall

Only reports from the last few days are helpful.

What were you doing at the time? surfing, watching a clip, reading something . . . .

As I remember I had written some text in the 'Text Editor' app and saved it. Then I clicked on a private Firefox tab. (I have tabs for open windows displayed along the bottom of the screen). There was one standard FF window open and maybe 2/3 private windows. The instant I clicked on the private tab all FF tabs disappeared but no crash reporter window was displayed.

The last time this happened was a number of days ago. It is pretty random and I don't understand why the Crash Reporter is not enabled. I have 'Malware Bytes' running with FF. Could it be that is the cause?

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.

Hi cor-el,

I downloaded and ran the FF version from the official Mozilla server which was tagged as Version 82.0.3 In fact the banner from 'About Firefox' indicated Version 81.0.2 It also crashed with no 'crash reporter' generated.

I have now had a notification from Fedora that updates were available and I have installed the updates. FF is now shown as Version 82.0.3 I'll try this for a while and see how it goes.

FF just crashed again and no crash reporter was generated. I was deleting a few outdated bookmarks when it happened. This is with FF version 82.0.3

You can try Firefox 83.0 with a new clean profile.

You can also try to start Firefox via a terminal window.

Also, If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

Good, no problem.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

Did you try to start Firefox via a terminal window like I wrote above as that can make Firefox to show error messages and warnings ?

more options

Hi cor-el,

I have not started this latest version from the terminal but I did that with the version which I downloaded from the Mozilla server. I will do that now with latest version and then will try running in Safe Mode as FredMcD suggests.

Hi Fred,

The link you provided for Linux safe mode refers to 'runlevel' The man page states 'runlevel' is an obsolete command and 'systemd' should be used. Do you have a view on this? Can you also suggest the options I should use for 'systemd'?

Thanks, Stuart
