The browser does not need a password to work. Are you talking about the Password Manager? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/search?q=Password%20Manager&w=3&qs=plugin

Or are you referring to a Firefox Account password?

If so, that is an optional feature that Mozilla promotes heavily for use for the Sync service; and many other Mozilla Firefox optional features like Newsletters and access to a variety of fora, such as this forum.
