about:newtab doesn't work on 78
In a forum name "How can I disable unsolicited Firefox web requests (e.g. "detectportal.firefox.com", "getpocket.cdn.mozilla.net", "snippets.cdn.mozilla.net")?" it was described to use about:newtab but this does not work in my version of FF 78, should it work?

What instructions are you trying to follow? about:newtab is the internal address of the New Tab page, so that doesn't seem like the right direction.
Maybe this article will help: How to stop Firefox from making automatic connections.

I don't understand what you're saying.
You normally make setting changes on the about:config page to enable or disable features.
how is the command about:newtab used?

about:newtab is the internal address of the new tab page. Type or paste it in the address bar and press Enter to load it.
If the page is blank, see whether you've hidden its contents: Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content.
