Hi there!

I migrated to a new Computer (win 10 x64) where I installed firefox 78.0.1. But it keeps crashing whenever an "explorer" window is open within firefox. i.e. most of the time when a download is started and absolutely every time when I open an integrated explorer windows (e.g. when I try to export/import the bookmarks to html).

I already tried cleaning the installation (with built-in function) as well as deleting all add ons with no result. I even completely re-installed firefox (whilst deleting ALL firefox-data in the %appdata% directories. No result, it still crashes I then made a new "fresh" profile - still it crashes

BTW: there is never any "crash log" generated, it just stops working and firefox "disappears"

I already searched this database and found 2 similar problems, but one was solved by upgrading to windows 10 (which I already have) and one was solve by uninstalling a specific security software (which I don't have).

So I really don't know how to fix this - any ideas?

Thank you and kind regards

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Hi Fred and thank you for your answer.

Unfortunately, starting in safe mode does not solve the problem. It still crashes upon opening an explorer window (e.g. the export bookmarks to html)

I also updated the graphics driver and some other stuff, but nothing worked.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox.

Hi Frank!

Thanks for your prompt reply. Indeed, starting Windows 10 in safe mode seems to solve the problem. Do you have any idea why? What's different in safe mode when it comes to explorer windows within firefox? Is there any symbolic link which might be broken?

In most computers, there are several types of Safe Mode. The primary ones used most are;

  • Safe Mode: Only programs that came with the computer are started. No other programs will be started unless the user starts them.
  • Safe Mode with Networking: Same as above but the network drivers (internet) will also be running.

This is a way to test if one of the other programs on the computer is causing the issue.

Hi Fred!

Thanks - I tried to randomly kill some applications. It seems, that my "multi-screen" software called "Ultramon" causes the trouble. When I disable it, it seems to no longer crash.

I'll see if the problem is really solved now or if it's just a coincidence. I'll let you (and the forum) know to help solving future similar problems

Meanwhile thanks a lot!
