how to redirect to a page without firefox asking me to allow it? - on macbook

more options

hello, this happens now every time i click a link to another site from an email. yes i want firefox to prevent the automatic redirection that some sites try to pull; but it should be obvious that when i click a link that i want to go there. (ie an email from discover card with a link to "view statement") links do work in other circumstances (ie a link to a youboob video from a wfmu comment board)

i've checked out the answers to this basic question and it is not solved. not for version 73.0.1 anyway.

in my preferences there is no "advanced" (except for fonts & colors); there is no "accessibility"...
someone suggested going to "about:config" and turning "blockautorefresh" to false. it seems like that might mess up some other functions...what's autorefresh got to do with redirecting? i do recall seeing the option "Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page", but that must've been on an older firefox version, or on my ancient windows laptop, because i cannot find it now.
            Thanks

In Firefox 56+ the "Warn me when website try to redirect or reload the page" setting can no longer be found in Options/Preferences.

You can modify this pref on the about:config page to enable or disable this feature.

  • accessibility.blockautorefresh

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

What does the message look like? Firefox's built-in feature shows a slim bar below the toolbar area with an Allow button. Do you get that one, or do you get an intermediary page from your email provider?

Thanks jscher this is what i got when i clicked the link to this site from the email i got about your reply. this site took my whole last paragraph and changed the font and put it in some user-unfriendly format so i don't know if anyone else can read it.

- relating to why previous answers don't apply.

Did you check the pref I mentioned above on the about:config page ?

  • accessibility.blockautorefresh

Thanks cor-el but maybe you cannot see my last paragraph the one about knowing that option. i don't know if changing "blockautorefresh" to "false" will change anything besides this one setting, the one that obviously should be a simple option in preferences where it used to be. anything at all. will "blockautorefresh" change anything that the name implies it may change (refreshing web pages automatically), as well as what i want to change? or is this setting the ONLY thing "blockautorefresh" changes?

cor-el my last paragraph in my original post was reformatted and i don't know if it's visible to others. i did check several other questions before posting mine and saw that option, went to about:config and then backed out because of the apprehension i just mentioned. i don't want to change anything else without knowing what it is first. Thanks

A very long time ago you had this setting that controlled the accessibility.blockautorefresh pref:

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> General : Accessibility : "Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page"

The setting in Options/Preferences has been remove, but Firefox still shows a notification bar at the top of the page when the accessibility.blockautorefresh is set to true. You will have to toggle the pref to false on the about:config page to remove the notification.

cor-el is correct. Flip the setting to false if you don't want that bar.

This seems awfully complicated for such a common issue. In my case, I log onto a very secure website. When I fill in my credentials and click on the allow bow just under the toolbar, I am redirected to my credentials page, which I fill in again, and when I clik again I am again redirected to my credentials page. Madening.... Andre.

Hi Andre, you have a very different issue from the problem in this thread.

I suspect you are blocking third party cookies needed in the authentication on that site. This article has information on how to unblock those: Websites say cookies are blocked - Unblock them.

If that isn't the issue, please start a new question using the following link. Keep scrolling down past suggestions presented during the process to continue with the new question form:

Thank you jscher and cor-el for your replies. i did switch blockautorefresh to "false" and of course it did solve the redirection issue; i guess i'll eventually have the answer to the main concern mentioned in my question when i can tell if this setting has affected any other functions. (clarified by me 3-6-20,10.37pm because i think this site rendered part of my initial question invisible to others) and if nothing else has gone wrong then i'll mark the problem as solved.
