Earlier today I had to reinstall win 10 to fix performance issues as I was unable to identify issues occuring. I have fixed the issues. But as result FIREFOX App was removed. And through this process all bookmarks and settings appear to have been lost also. I have attempted to import and or locate bookmarks but the only thing which appears is NEWER INSTALLATION. Is there a way to find all bookmarks from previous FIREFOX used? Please help?

Note it was not a FULL SYSTEM RESTORE just a reininstalltion of Windows is all. My documents were not deleted.

Firefox stores your personal data in the profile folder that is located in a hidden location in "AppData\Roaming".

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

If reinstalling Windows didn't remove this data then Firefox should have found it automatically when you reinstalled Firefox. Otherwise you can look for a possible "C:\Windows.old" folder that Windows might have been created.

Hello,

Im sorry this did not solve concern. What I see is that it doesnt launch the default when I try to launch it. Its as if the only available is the most recent installation. Based on what actually occured I reinstalled Windows without losing personal files. What then occured is on desktop there is an folder icon which says Removed apps. Within this it listed FIREFOX as being removed. Which makes me see that FIREFOX is no longer on computer. I then did a reinstallation of Firefox at which time I seen that FIREFOX BOOKMARKS or other settings were gone, missing or disabled.

If you turn on viewing of hidden files and folders and check the path mentioned by cor-el, do you only have one folder under Profiles?

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
If you have additional folders, look inside for a bookmarkbackups folder containing compressed files with names similar to:

Hello,

I am able to see what you said with respect to turning on hidden folders and drivers.

Additionally I can see the page

cor-el said.

What confuses me is I also see the " about:profiles " page

When I select to open and launch in newer browser its not displaying anything with old bookmarks or otherwise related. I do see this page its not allowing it to display anything.

About Profiles This page helps you to manage your profiles. Each profile is a separate world which contains separate history, bookmarks, settings and add-ons. Profile: default-release This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Do you have other Ideas to help me solve this? Specifically Exact steps on where to look for it at. Is it hidden in registry? Could a Command prompt option allow it to be gotten back being as how its hidden itself from ordinary view? I am in agreement that it should be available but its not. I have looked where each of you have suggested and attempted to look at files or folder which related to bookmarks. This is just bizzare if you ask me where could it have possibly gone?

Thanks for your help if you have more ideas I am all ears.

Chris

Hi Chris, were there any bookmark backup files anywhere that seem to have the right date to try viewing or restoring?

Hello, Jscher2000

I do not see any. See if there was it would be occuring prior to first post in this discussion above time and date of my very first post. Note I stated that I did do a Windows reinstallation not a full destructive reformat. This saved my documents. But appeared to have deleted FIREFOX as result of this. There was not any old bookmarks or bookmarks folder saved on desktop or whereever. This just doesnt make sense is all.

NOTE:

This is my first post so the BOOKMARK OLD should be dated before this time and date stamp on this brief write up here below this line. So as you can see 1:58 pm And I turned on computer at 12:42 pm that day. Another odd thing is I tried to do a system restore to earlier date and it said that the damn computer was updated recently which prevented me from going that route of rolling back system to this. I attempted to use System restore to go back to earlier checkpoint BEFORE restoring windows and without losing documents. What I am saying is that 12:42 pm on December 15, 2019 my bookmarks were there and available. at 1:58 pm same date they were gone most likely as result of the WINDOWS Reinstallation soft restore non destructive installation.

Okay, you have confirmed:

  • Windows 10 reinstall removed the Firefox program folder
  • Windows 10 reinstall removed the profile folder(s) or their contents (everything there is new)
  • You do not have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop from an earlier Firefox Refresh

Did you check:

Do you have a "C:\Windows.old" folder of the type created when you choose a Windows 10 Refresh? If so, it's roughly the same path to find Firefox profile folders:

C:\Windows.old\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Although System Restore is unusable, if Windows did not delete the earlier restore points, this may be an option:

Finding/Using Shadow Copies

You can use a utility program to search inside restore points to try to locate an old file that's usable. (Please do NOT try to use the built-in Windows System Restore for this because you probably would lose data.) Here are the steps:

(1) Set Windows to show hidden files and folders:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

(2) Download and run one of these two programs:

Within the most recent restore point shown in the program, you can explore along this path to see whether you can find a shadow copy of your profile:

\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

(3) Check in the bookmarkbackups folder of each profile for older backups. You can export interesting files to a convenient location such as your currently live desktop.

If you find a promising candidate, check out this article: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer -- you'll use the Choose File option at the bottom of the Restore menu to grab the file you exported.

Any luck?

Hello,

I am unable to find an "C:\Windows.old" folder.

I was able to find and select to show hidden files through the steps you shown. Not sure if it made it so it would show hidden files though because I couldnt find above.

I tried using the 2 options you listed.

(2) Download and run one of these two programs:

   ShadowExplorer: http://www.shadowexplorer.com/
   System Restore Explorer: http://nicbedford.co.uk/software/systemrestoreexplorer/

The first shadow Explorer shows nothing when attempting to launch program after selecting any of the said drives in this case we are speaking of C Drive correct?

As for the System Restore EXplorer that doesnt seem to do ANYTHING for me on this computer. I will move down the list and report back with further results.

Thanks

Hi again,

As per this--|

(3) Check in the bookmarkbackups folder of each profile for older backups.

I did not see any bookmarkbackups folder of ANY PROFILE not the adm or the guest user. Unclear where this may have gone or be located at?

Hmm, it sounds like the Windows reinstall destroyed the old data very thoroughly. I don't have any other ideas.

Ok research shows me that my HOME PREMIUM does not allow Shadow will not work on this computer as it is excluded from working according to this article.

The Shadow Copy features is available only in the higher Windows versions like Pro, Ultimate, Business and Enterprise, and not in versions like Home Premium, Home, Starter, etc. If your version of Windows does not allow shadow copy browsing, then you can surely go for this amazing, tiny and fast shadow copies exploring utility called ShadowExplorer. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/shadowexplorer-shadow-copies
