Before the recent API change, i was able to install an add-on that provided two buttons I use a lot: Get All messages (retrieve messages for all the configured accounts), and Select All (mark all the messages in the inbox).

The lack of those buttons in the current versions of Thunderbird has prevented me from upgrading to those versions.

Is there an add-on avaialable (and that works in the current version) that provides the functionality?

Thanks.

I don't know of another Select All button, but the one created on the button-creator page above works in TB 60 (see picture).

There are several add-ons that provide buttons to get or mark messages, so if you could provide links to the ones you used, we can propose alternatives or possibly see if the old add-ons can be made to work in TB 60.

There is a built-in option to right-click a folder, Mark Folder Read, and the Get Messages button has Get All New Messages in the drop-down.

The buttons I used in earlier versions, but did not work in current versions are from this add-on:

Toolbar Buttons by Button Guy.

I tried to use that add-on with the current version, but it did not work.

If it matters, I use Thunderbird on Linux Mint and on Windows 7.

I've seen those two workarounds you mention, however, both require multiple clicks, as opposed to a single, simple, click of a button.

Once I got accustomed to the ease of that single click, having to revert to multiple clicks for the same functionality was not desired.

Thanks for your reply.

Toolbar Buttons 1.1.1 doesn't work in TB 60, although the latest comment indicates it can be made to partly work. It is possible to create a button add-on to Select All the messages in a folder (tested in TB 60.8), but for getting messages, I suggest the Get Selected Mails add-on.

It looks like Get Selected Mail can do what I need (the default config looks OK). Thanks!

Unfortunately, when I install Toolbar Buttons, and then I go into Customize to drag buttons to the toolbar, there does not seem to be any "new" buttons of added to the pool of buttons. That's what i saw the last time i tried it a while ago.

Do you know of any other add-ons that have a "Select All" button?

Thanks again for you help.

I used the button creator page you suggested, and the Select All button it created works well.

Thank-you for you excellent assistance on this matter!

It appears I'm at the same point I was at back in July.

Mozilla has changed the add-on interface again. {sigh}

It seems I'm not the only one exasperated by this apparent lack of concern for the users and add-on developers...

From the add-on page for the Get Selected Mails add-on that was referenced above...

About this Add-on TB v68 compatibility note: There is no plan to move the addon to the TB v68 "standards", and here is why: - Mozilla itself has decided not to work on compatibility developments and leave "that" to the addon developers. I don't know how much a mozilla developer is paid, but speaking for myself the sum of the contributions i have ever received for 6 free addons during almost 10 years are a figure with 3 digits max... - Besides the fact Mozilla leaves us doing the "dirty work", they are not even able to provide detailed information about how to make the old addons compatible with their new standards. I mean a relevant guide, not an information note explaining that the addons should be restartless, turned into webextensions and so on, and not even giving an example. - That is not the first time that Mozilla is acting as if addons developers and the community was not important. I have had already several bad experiences in the past when my addons got broken just because Mozilla changed something which used to work without even thinking about compatibility or giving information....

Oh well, it looks like I'm heading back to the old version of Thunderbird, as i cannot find any other add-on with similar functionality.

I even tried to create a button using this page: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Archive/Mozilla/XUL/Toolbars/Custom_toolbar_button

but it did not work.

There is a Get All Mail Button for TB 68, which is not the same as Get Selected Mails. The shortcut for Get All New Messages is Shift+F5.

Thanks for the reply.

At this point, I've reverted to the prior version of Thunderbird, and will stay on that version while I look for an alternative email client.

Two significant, extension-breaking API changes in the course of a single year indicates to me that there is a significant issue in the Thunderbird development process.

Thanks again for your reply, and for the excellent help you've provided for me in the past.
