You still have a Firefox window open? Try:

• menu button > Library > History > Recently closed windows
• (menu bar) History > Recently closed windows

Also, just in case, make a backup of the files in the sessionstore-backups folder. Here's how:

Do not exit Firefox, or if you closed it, don't re-open it.

(1) To open your profile folder...

If Firefox is still running:

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

• "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
• (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
• type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" (or "Show in Finder") button.

If Firefox is closed:

Type or paste the following into the Windows Run dialog or the system search box and press Enter to launch Windows Explorer:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

In that folder, do you see a semi-randomly-named folder? If so, click into it. If you find multiple such folders, find the one that was most recently updated.

(2) Copy out session history files

In your profile folder, double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save all files here to a safe location such as your Documents folder.

(3) What are those files?

For future reference, the kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

• recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
• recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.jsonlz4
• previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
• upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update
• some .js files from Firefox 55 or earlier

Oh, you're on Mac. You might be in better shape than someone who closed a window on Windows or Linux because it takes an extra step to quit Firefox, right?

Normally, if you are closing a window with more than one tab in it, Firefox will ask you to confirm. However, that could be turned off. To check on that:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste tabs.warn and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the browser.tabs.warnOnClose preference is bolded and "modified" or "user set" to false, double-click it to restore the default value of true

You might also check:

(4) In the search box above the list, type or paste quit and pause while the list is filtered

(5) If the browser.warnOnQuit preference is bolded and "modified" or "user set" to false, double-click it to restore the default value of true

(6) Normally, if you have Firefox set to restore your previous session windows and tabs automatically at startup, that bypasses the setting in #5. To get a warning anyway, double-click the browser.sessionstore.warnOnQuit preference to switch its value from false to true

Menu button> library ?... I dont have any library tabs in my firefox menu ?

I already tried to reopen the recently closed window from the history but it open just few windows without opening the real one with the 200 tabs inside....

I made a copy of library/application support/firefox/profiles folder then what i am supposed to do please ?

You can drop a file like previous.jsonlz4 or the last upgrade snapshot -- obviously that's going to be a bit old now -- on my Scrounger tool to extract a list of its contents. Can you find one with most of the tabs?

I have one file "previous.jsonlz4 " in profiles/20yn12z8.default and 6 other "sessionstore-backups" in profiles/20yn12z8.default/ sessionstore-backups

So which one i take ? And take to place where please ?

Okay, as listed in an earlier message, some of the files will be fresher than others. You can compare the timestamps to get a sense of which are the most promising.

You would position a Finder window over the Scrounger tool and drag-and-drop the file you want to investigate into the box on the page. It should make more sense once you open the page.

Ok im not sure to understand what do you mean because on Mac we simply have to replace file in the profile folder by the good one but as i know which file i want to choose, i am not sure to know where to place it....

What is it that you want to do now? My suggestion is to use the Scrounger tool to figure out which file to roll back to. If you just want to try and see what happens, you could do that, too.

To try swapping in a session history file from your backup folder so Firefox will load it, the standard "manual swap" method is as follows (assuming Firefox is still running):

(1) From inside Firefox, open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

• "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
• (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
• type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Return

In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button. This should launch a Finder window listing the various files and folders in your profile.

If Finder just selects the folder for the profile and doesn't show you the details, double-click into the folder.

(2) Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Quit, either:

• "3-bar" menu button > Quit
• (menu bar) Firefox > Quit Firefox

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup -- these changes should occur:

• recovery.jsonlz4 is moved from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main level of the profile folder and renamed to sessionstore.jsonlz4
• recovery.baklz4 is deleted from sessionstore-backups

(3) Once Firefox has stopped updating things, while viewing the main level of the profile folder, rename sessionstore.jsonlz4 to sessionstoreOLD.jsonlz4

(4) Copy the file you want to restore into the profile folder (main level, not into sessionstore-backups), and rename it to sessionstore.jsonlz4 -- after the rename, Finder should show it right next to sessionstoreOLD.jsonlz4 in alphabetical order (if it works like Windows)

(5) Start Firefox and it should read the swapped in file and restore whatever was in it; if you do not have Firefox set to restore your previous windows and tabs automatically, use either

• menu button > Restore Previous Session
• (menu bar) History > Restore Previous Session
