I open a new page, Firefox in Windows 10 hangs looking for an update for several minutes. Then reports Firefox is up to date. A few minutes later, same thing. How do I stop Firefox from looking to update. Options seems to offer a choice but won't accept the change. Thanks.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

Without a re-install, is it possible to change a value in about:config to stop the automatic search for updates?

How do you completely turn off update checks in Firefox 64? You can use a policies.json file to disable updates for all users. https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md

I really appreciate the help but this turned out to be a disaster. After following the instructions, the laptop froze and would not restart as these directions caused unexpected registry changes. 4 1/2 hrs. later with tech support required a complete new install of Windows 10. Day 2, continuing the updates to Windows 10. All of this just trying to get Firefox to stop automatically looking for updates! I'm glad my files were backed up.

Sorry about that  :-( I never heard of that kind of problem for just cleaning the registry.
