MacBook 2.2 GHz Core Duo with 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 DRAM running version 10.7.5 no longer supports Firefox, any suggestions that would allow me to update Firefox?

My question describes the problem. I have this old MacBook I travel with and want to see if there are things I can do to it so that I can update Firefox which probably requires me to be able to update the operating system to El Capitain. I have an iMac at home which is up to date in everyway but I hate to through out this high functioning but old MacBook if it can be bought into the modern world.

Thank you

Hi,

Unfortunately, there is no way to run a newer version of Firefox using OS X. 10.7 is the last version of OS X that will run on that computer, and Firefox 48 is the last version of Firefox that supports Lion.

One thing you could possibly do instead is to install Ubuntu or some other linux distribution on it. As far as I can tell, Ubuntu still supports your computer, which would allow you to run the latest version of Firefox. However, if you have other software running on the computer that requires OS X, this may not be a good option, and there don't seem to be a lot of good guides for how to do this (this article has a basic overview).

Hope that helps!

Firefox 49.0 and later has required OSX 10.9 or later to run. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-osx

Otherwise Linux as mentioned to run more current Firefox versions.

Actually the latest update that worked on Mac OSX 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 was actually Fx 45.9.0 released on April 19, 2017 and not the Fx 48.0.2 released earlier on August 24, 2016.
