Did you keep a copy of plugin-container.exe, so you can restore it because you shouldn't remove files that way?

Note that the System Details list shows Flash as installed, so you may not have succeeded.

  • Shockwave Flash 31.0 r0

You can find details like installation path on the about:plugins page.

Hi joshuawilsoncom, did you disable Flash in Firefox?

You can do that on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Plugins.

Then on the right side you usually will find OpenH264, Shockwave Flash, and Widevine. Change the default permission for Shockwave Flash from "Ask to Activate" to "Never Activate" to completely hide it from websites.

Any improvement?

Okay, for anyone who streams, Flash is a necessity. Why Firefox continues it's ridiculousness I don't know. Now, even when I'm not streaming this stupid Plugin Container causes Firefox to freeze. All I need to do is force it to stop using Task Manager and things go back to normal. But, it's ridiculous to have to do this multiple times per day. I'm running the latest version of Firefox and just a few add-ons (ABP, sound cancellation, Amazon, Norton) yet this continues to happen on random sites. I'm about done with Firefox if I don't find a permanent fix. The only things I've found online are dated 2010-2012 and don't show near the number of items in dom.ipc that exist now. HELP!

Okay, for anyone who streams, Flash is a necessity.

Most sites are moving away from Flash for streaming video.

Now, even when I'm not streaming this stupid Plugin Container causes Firefox to freeze.

Why is a site using Flash if it's not for video? Playing a game? Showing a video ad? Stashing data in a "Flash supercookie"?

What is your global Flash permission setting? Do not use "Always Activate" if you want control of which sites use Flash and when.

I just tried logging into TripAdvisor, not a site for streaming. Firefox seized up. It was the only tab open. Clicking on anything elicited nothing.

Using Task Manager I ended the container and the site worked just fine. As well, have you ever tried to watch NBC Sports without enabling Flash? Or ESPN+. As you say, "most sites are moving away..." but not all have done.

My global Flash setting IS to "Always Activate" because every time I go to certain websites to watch video, I get either frozen out by Firefox or the error that I need to activate Flash.

As part of my work, I need to be able to stream video across a number of sites from the US and many other countries. As well, I'd like to be able to log into sites like TripAdvisor without having to go through needless hoops just because no one has an answer to my question other than more questions.

Hi BillH11103, TripAdvisor is an advertising business. If you let TripAdvisor use Flash, don't be surprised if they do.

If you try using click-to-play for 24 hours, is your experience different? See: Why do I have to click to activate plugins?

And/or, have you considered using add-ons to reduce advertising, such as:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

As with any content blocker, you may need to use its toolbar button on various sites to allow ads. It's your call whether it is saving you time and aggravation overall.

Yes, I'm using Ad Blocker Plus (ABP). It works 90% of the time, and when it doesn't, I get an alert that I need to unblock ads.

That's not the problem. It's the Plugin Container, as the only thing that stops all of Firefox freezing up is when I disable the Plugin Container. Then, everything works fine, no matter the site.

I've had the problem on Gmail, and other pages where the ads are blocked.

At this minute, I'm running Xfinity Stream via Firefox and it's working just fine. No ads are being blocked, and the Plugin Container IS active.

In other words, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Therefore, it needs more work.

Okay, today I had a problem shopping on Home Depot and Lowe's. Pages just wouldn't load at all until I ended the Plugin Container via the Task Manager. As well, on another computer I tried streaming and I kept getting a message from the website that I was running an ad-blocker. I am not running one on that computer, yet when I deleted the Plugin Container the show played. For a bit then the Plugin Container would appear again and the streaming would stop. I'm about done with Firefox. Other than this fiasco, it's the best browser out there. But, I can't do my job without being able to stream from sources around the globe.

Did you try this:

Also, what is the likelihood of rogue software running Flash, or a bad extension? You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove).

Any improvement?

I'm not sure what click-to-play for 24 hours is, but I've tried "Allow"and "Remember this decision" checkbox and the next day it's the same issue again.

All the addons I'm running are fine from looking at the list. Nothing I've not installed myself, and none have caused issue in the past.

But, I tried one other thing from a previous ticket and the streaming seems to be working okay. But, still on some shopping sites, I get frozen out again until I click on the Plugin Container in Task Manager and end it.

I do hope this is resolved in future updates. It's annoying.
