Tried this but it tells me this site can't be reached.

Your reply to FredMcD's post .....

Could you be a bit more specific please  ? Like : what is "it"  ?

At startup Firefox should open your homepage - if, after removing Avast completely, you still get an "Avast Browser window", I'm beginning to think that you may have picked up some malware.

Woud it be possible for you to provide a screenshot of this "Avast Browser window"  ?

If you need help to create a screenshot, please see :

This may be a home page issue. Or is it the search engine also?

Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar.

There are two settings;

  • When Firefox Starts

When the browser is started, what do you want to display? Many of us choose Show My Home Page.

  • Home Page

When a new page is opened, what do you want to be displayed?

  1. Use Current Page. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
  2. Use Bookmark
  3. Restore To Default. about:home shows a Mozilla home page with tools.

You can use any of these that you wish;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any webpage or about: page you want.

Could it be that this Avast browser window that you mentioned is one of these : Avast SafeZone Browser, Avast Secure Browser, Avast Safe Price  ?

If so, see :

My personal opinion : get rid of Avast altogether.

Here's why :

And also : https://www.howtogeek.com/239950/dont-use-your-antivirus-browser-extensions-they-can-actually-make-you-less-safe/

With Windows built-in Defender and a browser like Firefox you're pretty
safe .....

Just in case you are dealing with malware - would you please take a look at this article :

It's important to run all the scans that are listed in the article.
