suddenly, firefox takes a long time to open; then although familiar toolbars/bookmarks are there, I cannot reach any website at all(win7).
Chugging along just fine as usual, in the early part of today(using Firefox several times). With Firefox closed, I went to open it and it took ages to open fully. When it did open, the familiar toolbars were there, including my Bookmarks toolbar. The Bookmarks toolbar is showing the icons of sites that I have put there, and it is showing my self-created folders on it (containing various website shortcuts etc). The only difference is that the folders are grey instead of yellow. However, nothing is actually HAPPENING. No matter what I click on, I am not reaching any website whatsoever. I cannot actually go anywhere at all with Firefox. My internet connection is working just fine. I can open email software and I can open (and use) Internet Explorer. Why has my Firefox just stopped functioning on my Windows 7 PC? It is Firefox Quantum ESR 60.2.0esr. I am typing this support request on my Windows 10 laptop where Firefox Quantum 62.0 is working ok!

What extensions and what Security software are you running ? Avast/Avg is presently sometimes a issue with the scanner.
You can do a clean install be uninstalling it as the Profile is in a separate place and will not be effected. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Backup is always a good idea :
I uninstalled Firefox completely (windows 7). Then I used Internet Explorer (which is the only functioning browser I have at the moment!!) to navigate to Mozilla Firefox - and I downloaded it (i.e. the latest) and it has "successfully" installed. It has also harnessed all my previous personalised bookmarks etc. BUT it is still utterly impossible to reach any website at all. When I attempt a search, or click on a favourite/saved link, e.g., it opens a New Tab every time and this little row of New Tabs are each labelled "New Tab" with a little black dot oscillating from side to side. What on earth is the solution to this nonsense - which has come from nowhere today? I use Kaspersky Total Security.
There is security software like Avast/AVG, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connections and send their own certificate. If you are running any of the above software please check their community forum for a work around to apply settings.

No joy with anything that you have suggested. The Kaspersky protection that I use on my Window 7 desktop PC is exactly the same as the Kaspersky protection that I use on my Windows 10 laptop. The Firefox on the laptop continues to work normally - just the way Firefox used to work on my desktop ..........until a few hours ago, when it just stopped. I live in dread of Firefox becoming unusable on the laptop too! I have used Firefox for more years than I can remember.
I have provided you with the info to Backup so there should not be worries if you use it.
As for 1 working fine and one not : Just because it is working does not mean the other is fine and dandy as each install is different.
I have backed up (this has created a folder called Old Firefox Data). Obviously, two separate installations are different, especially when one is on Windows 7 and one is on Windows 10, but my point is that the Firefox version installed on both devices is the same - as also is the version of Kaspersky. But this total failure of Firefox on my Windows 7 PC has occurred out of the blue today, with no apparent cause. This is what makes me fear that the same could happen on the Windows 10 laptop (also out of the blue and without an apparent cause). Even having a backup is not going to make Firefox work, is it? The analogy is: if for example, I have backed up some personal data/files to say a cloud or an external hard drive, the backed up data will be "safe" but it won't actually work, or be accessible, if the PC itself breaks down. Ergo, Firefox "back up" doesn't help if Firefox itself won't work!
Actually yes as can load more than one Profile into Firefox.
Please try a Refresh but Note that this does more than uninstalling and re-installing does. Normal uninstalling does not remove some preferences which may have become corrupt. Since have backed up then do not need to do so :

I have read all of your links and suggestions, including complete refresh of Firefox (two or three times now). I have created a new profile and then opened Firefox with that new profile. Naturally, there were no customizations nor preferences, as one would expect. But as with my existing(default) profile, Firefox just shows tabs with oscillating black dots and a completely BLANK space on the screen underneath, totally unable to reach any website whatsoever. There are no add-ons. There are three plug-ins (put there by Mozilla apparently). There is one extension, which is my Kaspersky - and I have enabled it, then disabled it, and it makes no difference. I am in complete despair. Firefox just will NOT work on my Win7 PC (after years and years of smooth useage).
I had live chat with Kaspersky this morning. They don't have a fix for this problem, but they sent me a workaround. I have tried their workaround, but so far, it has NOT worked. Firefox remains out of my reach and use.
What was the workaround offered by Kaspersky? Was that a setting in Kaspersky or a setting in Firefox?
I had to navigate to appdata roaming mozzilla firefox profiles, where I removed Cert9.db from one of the folders (Cert9.db was in only one of the two folders I found there).
Hi, since it is a plugin please Refresh and remove it completely and do not put it back. Once your fixed if you want to put something back put this : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/malwarebytes/ Only when fixed, note it can break sites as it blocks 3rd party cookies but you can open and turn that off and turn on easily.

Find the DOS Prompt or Type Cmd.exe and Right Click and Run as Administrator
Copy/Paste SFC /Scannow and then Enter ( SFC<space>/Scannow) Reboot after.
Sorry, Pkshadow, I don't fully understand the suggestions - and they sound alarming. Subsequently, I have tried turning off Kaspersky, then attempting Firefox again (without Kaspersky). No joy. The workaround from Kaspersky did not work. Kaspersky programme reports to me that Firefox is not protected "due to unknown error". Just a reminder that this has happened since Firefox updated itself (on my Windows 7 PC) to Quantum 62.0
try remove all add-ons you don't want or bookmarks you no longer need.

This usually means that Kaspersky wants to add extensions to Firefox or inject (hook) DLLs to hook and isn't able to complete these actions. You should still have the basic protection that Kaspersky offers as a firewall and scanning files you download from internet. The extras that security software tries to add to Firefox can cause a lot of issues in many cases and should be used with care.
My problem with Firefox 62.0 Quantum (on my Windows 7 desktop PC) is on a roller coaster from bad to worse, including 2.5 days of diagnostics, then attempting lots of fruitless fixes, lots of PC re-starts, then brief joy&relief, and now, back to misery again. My Kaspersky extension in Firefox is disabled, and I am leaving it that way. I do not have any add-ons. The joy&relief episode? After the 2.5 days of screaming frustration (during which Firefox refused to connect itself to the internet, as described in my foregoing posts), I decided to go to bed - leaving my Windows 7 DiskCheck in operation on my Cdrive. (full DiskCheck: fix errors, find bad sectors etc etc). Next morning, the PC was ready for me to boot up with my password as usual. Without much hope, I launched Firefox and it WORKED PERFECTLY! A wonderful day, playing with Firefox, doing all the things I like doing, everything working like a dream. Then I closed down the PC and went to bed at the end of happy yesterday. This morning, the nightmare has returned. Firefox, again, will NOT work. Thinking that the only thing that had seemed to fix it earlier, was the Windows DiskCheck, I have now run DiskCheck again - but to no avail. Firefox still will not work. The only way I am able to type this report to Mozilla Forum, is by using Internet Explorer.11 (which is a poor substitute for the experience I normally have with Firefox).
try remove Kaspersky extension from firefox by using iobit uninstaller.
