Thunderbird crashes and will not start, window turns black. Must use Task manager to close. @ mozilla::mailnews::MsgDBReporter::CollectReports and OOM | small

Kuphostiwe

Thunderbird unexpectedly crashed several times for no understandable reason, spanning two separate updates to thunderbird. Automatic crash reports were observed being sent during the shut down process. Obviously the crash reports were never acted on because the crashes continued intermittently, until the point where the screen "froze" and no keystrokes or mouse clicks could close the program.

Using Ctrl. Alt. Dele. to open Task Manager to force "end process" on thunderbird.exe, was the only option to close thunderbird, NOW IT IS 100% Crashed.

The only thing that happens when I try to start thunderbird is that the screen starts to display small black rectangles and wherever I click the screen, it creates new black rectangles, eventually the entire thunderbird window turns black, and I cannot move it nor mimize it nor close it with any normal mouse action.

This problem started when I was connected to the internet via an extremely high speed broadband cable and I was the ONLY user on my home private network.

I am having no problems with any other software or the operating system on my Dell laptop using Windows 7.

I have emptied trash and junk folders in Thunderbird and greatly reduced the number of messages in all of my local folders. NOTHING HELPS

I have been afraid to uninstall thunderbird and re-install in fear that I might lose all my thunderbird data files. I have not done ANYTHING ELSE to try to fix this.

URGENTLY NEED ADVICE AND INSTRUCTION.

Thunderbird started okay in safe mode, and I observed that some of my customizing of the display order and data fields displayed was one of the things mentioned during the safe mode startup that would be un-done.

I did not have time to send or recieve emails during that time, was forced to shut down & rush off to a meeting.

I wonder if that customization contributed to the crashing. I am back on line now at 6:19 pm Pacific Daylight time. Standing by for further instructions.

Will try safe mode again and sending email.

After a 24 hr. delay, I tried booting into safe mode again and it worked just fine, so I booted into regular mode and it opened okay also. I sent a brief email with an attachment and it went normally.

Then I started a second email with a few hundred text characters and no attachments and no graphics. While typing, Thunderbird Crashed AGAIN with no apparent aggravation on my part.

I re-booted into safe mode and disabled all add ons and custom settings.

I tried re-booting in safe mode, but this time it will not boot into safe mode. the thunderbird window opens, but slowly fills in with black rectangles until the entire window goes black. The only way to clear the screen is by force closing with task manager.

Following are two new crash reports from today's disasters in chrono order.

CAN'T I JUST UNINSTALL AND RE-INSTALL Thunderbird and start over with my existing data files or will uninstall erase all my existing data?

you data and setting are stored in the same profile. They are not something reinstalling can help.

My guess is you are having issues with your graphics adapter. Restart your computer completely and I am guessing Thunderbird will start in safe mode.

Go to options > advanced and change the setting for use hardware acceleration. Turn it off. This is one of the things that occurs in safe mode that is not "advertised"

I found the hardware acceleration option was NOT checked, it was ALREADY TURNED OFF.

In that case try turning it on :) (but I doubt it will make any difference)

In any case please post your results of updating your drivers

UPDATED ALL DRIVERS !

However, the GRAPHICS DRIVER was already up to date and so the update server did not update the graphics driver.

Thunderbird is still crashing but the window is not turning black now, it just crashes and I can re-start it

Thanks for the update. Does that crash come with a crash ID? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter-tb#w_viewing-crash-reports

Edited: re : graphics driver is up to date: Perhaps this is due to age and only legacy driver available.

re :Thunderbird is still crashing but the window is not turning black now, it just crashes and I can re-start it. At what point does it crash - at start or after x minutes or when you select anything? Does it crash if you start Thunderbird in offline mode? Use: Start > Run Type exactly the following, including the " signs:

  • "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -offline

Note: there is a space between:

  • Mozilla and Thunderbird
  • .exe" and -offline

Please post the latest crash report id's.
