Open tabs are no longer being displayed. How do I get them back. I can open up the list but prefer to see them below the Bookmarks Toolbar. Please help.

1. But now the tabs are ABOVE the Bookmarks bar which logically is not where it should be.

Tabs moved to the top in Firefox 4, so probably you were using Classic Theme Restorer or another add-on to change their position in recent years?

Custom Style Rule Method

This takes about 10 minutes, so when you can set aside time and take it slowly and carefully:

(1) Create a chrome folder in your currently active Firefox profile, by following Steps 1-3 of this page:

https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html

I have a demo video there if the text needs some visual context.

(2) Set Windows to show all file extensions (Step 4 on the above page)

(3) Download a custom rule set from my website, and move it into that new chrome folder. This is the file:

https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css

(4) Assuming this is your first userChrome.css file, right-click > Rename it and delete the -tabs_on_bottom from the name so it's just userChrome.css -- then click away to have Windows save the change.

If you already have a working userChrome.css file, copy the rules from userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css into your current userChrome.css file.

(5) Exit Firefox and start it up again so Firefox reads and applies the rules.

Success?

Please expand on your issue as not enough information provided, lists, below. ??

Until recently I could see buttons near the top of my screen to allow me to switch with a single click to any open tab. I’ve lost this functionality.

Can you attach a screenshot to show what your Firefox looks like?

Are you using code in userChrome.css?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

You can rename/remove xulstore.json and if present delete localstore.rdf in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Usually if your Firefox were in full screen mode you would lose all your toolbar, not just your tabs bar, so it's a little mysterious unless you are modifying the toolbar area with custom style rules.

What if you turn on the menu bar? To turn different bars on and off, you can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Toolbars button (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Menu Bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, or other bars, click it on the list.

Shall do. See capture.jpg. Note that not only can I not see other open tabs, I can't close them and I don't have the + sign that allows me to open a new one.

I can view open tabs by View, Show All Tabs. That opens a temporary window showing a list of open tabs but there is still no way that I can see to close unwanted tabs.

If I log in as another user on this PC I can display (and therefore close) all open tabs or open a new one. See CapureMZ.png.

Thanks

John

How do you get an item called View > Show All Tabs ?

Seems something is customized.

Also, it's strange that your bookmark toolbar items are above your address bar and the Bookmarks Toolbar is empty.

Could you temporarily revert that:

(1) Open Customize (View > Toolbars > Customize or "3-bar" menu button > Customize)

(2) Find "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" above the address bar and drag it back to the Bookmarks Toolbar (dotted box below the address bar)

Does that make any difference?

Dear jsher2000

None of that made much sense to me I'm afraid. Especially the reference to the + button which was one of the things I'd lost.

So I took the wimp's option and reinstalled Firefox. That fixed it.

2 more questions if that's OK:

1. But now the tabs are ABOVE the Bookmarks bar which logically is not where it should be.

Can you offer a fix for that? (I've read reference to a css file but have no idea what it is or how to use it. In fact I think it was in one of your posts.)

2. I've also lost the search window next to the address window. Sure, I know you don't need it but it was nice to have it. Can you help with that? (Curiously, the other user on this PC got the search bar after the reinstall. See image CatureMZ.jpg.

Many thanks for your time.

Cheers

John

Dear jsher2000, please ignore the 2nd question about the search window. I solved that. Just the order of the toolbars.

Yes, thank you. You were right, btw, I had to fix that issue a few years ago but I must have done it a different way. None of the above rings a bell.

Anyway, many thanks, great!
