more options

this is ridiculous nowhere on 58 does it allow me to restore previous sessions. I closed my ff browser with my 50 odd tabs I use all the time, while having another ff browser with 1 tab open, which meant that next time I opened i saw none of my previous tabs. No way to get these back this is the worst browser ever disgusting Im changing browser if this isnt sorted out asap you can keep ff

Click on the 3 line menu in the top right >> click on Restore Previous Session. It should be the 4th item in the menu!

That would mean your History options are set to clear any history or tabs or sessions. You need to go back to your Options and History setting to see what is checked to be cleared.

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for Cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing "cookies" will remove all selected Cookies including Cookies with an "Allow" exception you may want to keep

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

Either:

(A) Firefox did not find a usable session history file, or (B) Firefox already restored the session automatically (crash recovery)

Next thing to check is either:

  • "Library" toolbar button > History > Recently Closed Windows (and within each restored window, Recently Closed Tabs)
  • (menu bar) History > Recently Closed Windows (and within each restored window, Recently Closed Tabs)

If all else fails, you can go digging for older files that could have some of your missing tabs. Could you start by making a backup of your existing session history files? Here's how:

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button. That should launch a Windows Explorer window showing the files and folders in your profile folder.

Double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save all files here to a safe location, or you can copy/paste this folder to your desktop.

What files did you find?

The kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

  • recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
  • recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.jsonlz4
  • previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update
  • various .js files from Firefox 55 or earlier

Could you take a look at what you have and the date/time of the various files to see whether any of them are likely to have the missing tabs?

To preview the contents of a file, you can drag and drop it onto this page, then click Scrounge URLs: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/scrounger.html

That tool is on my site, so please let me know if it doesn't work for you.

All the files are there None go back to before todays date. I have added a add-on called tab session manager, it can restore sessions but needs a .json or .session files where do I get these files? Still no one hasnt answered why Im not seeing the option under menu for Session? There is Library and Add-ons but no session. My options : Clear history when Firefox closes is not ticked.

Did your Firefox perform a Refresh? That would create an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop. If you see that folder, check the [profile]\sessionstore-backups folder inside.

Tab Session Manager saves your session each time you exit out of Firefox. Its toolbar button should provide access to those. None listed?? If you installed it after this problem began, it won't help you.

I don't know what .json files you are looking for.

A .session file is a file that would have been created by a legacy extension named Session Manager in Firefox 56 and earlier, so that's unlikely to help you.

Still no one hasnt answered why Im not seeing the option under menu for Session?

You would need "History -> Recently Closed Tabs/Windows" if you first closed the window with your tabs and only then noticed that another window was still open. Best is to restore the closed window immediately and close Firefox in the proper way via the Exit menu item instead of using the close X that only closes the current window.

so where do I find a add-on or plugin to load my previous sessions? why doesnt ff have a session handler? you faq shows a session option under the menu but thats outdated as it doesnt appear in your latest ff. so basically from what I understand ff doesnt cater for restoring sessions - all these answers are very involved and complicated ways of saying no easy way ff handles prvious sessions anymore which is a big let down and I think for this reason its time to look at alternatives that do manage failures and backups . real let down ff

I think you said your Firefox is set up to restore the previous session automatically. Firefox allows you to do that, or to restore the previous session on demand if you don't. If there is a crash, Firefox will try to do it automatically. That is the built-in feature.

After a session is restored, you can use the Recently Closed Windows to re-open closed windows (like in your scenario in your original question). Did you already check that? Hopefully you did, since only the latest 3 closed windows are stored.

You are correct that Firefox does not have a feature of restoring any old session file you might find. If you want to restore a different session file you have to works with the built-in feature: after exiting out of Firefox, you need to substitute the old file for the current one on disk so that Firefox thinks it's from the immediately previous session. Do you want the detailed steps for that?
