Can't copy logins.json to another directory on the same computer.

Kuphostiwe

I keep a copy of my Firefox & Thunderbird profiles because FF sometimes loses my tabs. If that happens, I just copy yesterday's to my active profile (works every time so far). Now when I do that, about 4 our of 5 days I get a msg: "Can't copy logins.json" & says I need permission from Enterprise\Pope (my computer's name is Enterprise & my nickname is Pope). Bear in mind that I'm doing this from one directory to another on the SAME computer.

Two questions: Why does it do this & how can I correct it?

Thanks...

Erik

Did you check the permissions of the file(s) and folders?

You can try to copy the files as administrator, but that can still give issues if the files do not have write permissions for the current user.

Note that Firefox 58 has switched to logins.json and key4.db (SQLite) and no longer uses key3.db, but can fallback to key3.db if you remove key4.db. Because Firefox 58+ uses key4.db the two password files are no longer backwards compatible.

Permissions are the same for the file & all directories above it - all are granted except for "special permissions" which I can't choose. Today, I tried to copy it with "run as administrator" which worked the last couple days but didn't today. What is going on?

Still haven't figured this out. About 20% of the time it copies fine but about 80% of the time I get the can't copy msg. I don't understand how it can change from day to day. Is there some way to change permissions on this file? Help...

Separate Security Issue: Update your Flash Player Note: Windows users should download the ActiveX for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the ActiveX.

Flash Player Version: Version 28.0.0.161

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Direct link scans current system and browser Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Step 1: Select Operating System Step 2: Select A Version (Firefox, Win IE . . . .) Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only> +++++++++++++++++++ See if there are updates for your graphics drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

Still no joy & now it is doing it most every time. Not sure how to change permissions on this file & if I don't do that, it will probably continue. Any help on these permissions? Thanks...

I assume the issue is the delete step: Windows needs to delete the existing logins.json before it can copy in the new one. You haven't noticed anything different about the permissions on the existing logins.json file versus, for example, extensions.json or key4.db?

Did you check the permissions and ownership of all the files in the profile folder where you want to copy the files to?

If you copy files as administrator then it isn't certain that the user get the ownership of the file. If you copy the file as a normal user then the source file in the backup and the backup itself needs to be owned by the user to avoid permissions issues. Backups created as administrator will likely cause issues.
